BAUER-VERLAG REPORTS 16.9 PERCENT INCREASE IN SALES
HAMBURG, Germany, Nov. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The German publishing group Bauer-Verlag reported a 16.9 percent increase in sales to DM 2.5 billion in fiscal 1990 from DM 2.139 billion during the previous fiscal year. The company added that its earnings potential had increased mainly thanks to the expansion of distribution revenues after the opening up of markets in the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany). During fiscal 1991 Bauer-Verlag acquired the German daily newspaper "Magdeburger Volksstimme" and launched "TV-Quick" in the U.K. The group's interim report added that the expansion of business activities in eastern Germany, especially regarding distribution, allowed the management to expect a positive effect on fiscal 1991 results.
The 1990 sales increase was almost totally thanks to press products which amounted to DM 2.464 billion, a rise of DM 360 million or 17.2 percent compared with 1989. Of this increase DM 300 million represented the domestic market which meant that at DM 2.009 billion, domestic sales passed the DM 2 billion mark for the first time. The increase in this sector amounted to 17.6 percent. Foreign sales increased by DM 60 million or 15.2 percent to DM 455 million. The percentage of foreign sales of press products remained virtually unchanged at 18.5 percent.
Within Germany the Bauer Publishing Group stated that after years of stagnation, advertising revenues grew 4.9 percent in fiscal 1990. The distribution segment could, especially through good sales figures in eastern Germany, increase 19.7 percent. "This development lost some momentum in the current year, however, many objects of the publishing group achieved significant sales increases," Bauer-Verlag said in conclusion.
