BAUER TO DOLE: 'STOP SUBSIDIZING ANTI-FAMILY PROPAGANDA AT PBS'
WASHINGTON, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Gary Bauer, former domestic policy adviser to President Reagan now president of the Family Research Council, called on Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.) this week to help stop the abuses of taxpayers' money by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
In a four-page letter to the U.S. Senate minority leader, Bauer said, "The American people should not be subsidizing a propaganda machine designed to destroy traditional values. We need to end (Independent Television Service) funding and to rein in a rogue Corporation for Public Broadcasting."
During the funding debates in Congress right now, Bauer and the Family Research Council have called for an end to funding for PBS in light of its anti-family programming, especially in shows produced by ITVS.
Bauer noted that "typical programs funded by ITVS include a $245,000 grant to Marlon Riggs, who wrote and directed the pro- homosexual 'Tongues Untied,' which was so offensive more than 100 PBS stations refused to air it."
Currently, ITVS is conducting a competition to produce a series called "Television Families" designed to "test the boundaries" of the family, including a look at "new alternative households, new patterns of adoption and birth ... new articulations of rights for children," Bauer noted.
Robert Knight, director of FRC's Cultural Studies Project, said that pro-family groups should take ITVS "at their word and fight to cut funding to their anti-family productions. They have made their radical intentions abundantly clear."
The Family Research Council is a pro-family policy, lobbying and education organization that works at the federal level, advocating pro-family positions and critiquing the impact of federal programs on the family.
