BAUER POWER; VALENCIA QB STEPS IN AND UP.

Byline: Jim Inghram Staff Writer

When Valencia High opened its season against Highland, junior quarterback Kyle Bauer was on the sidelines On the sidelines

as a sophomore, was in the huddle. It was up to him to lead the Vikings' offense.

He did, as the Vikings defeated the Bulldogs 27-13, but a whole season loomed in the distance.

``Everybody always asks me, but I wasn't nervous,'' Bauer said. ``I really didn't have a chance to be. It happened so fast. I was in there and just tried to remember what I was supposed to do.''

It helped Bauer to have UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

Ironically it was his worst game, but Peninsula has proved to be an uncommon opponent. The Panthers are undefeated and the No. 2 seed in the Division II playoffs. They moved on to big things and so has Bauer.

``I started feeling more comfortable after that game,'' Bauer said. ``It helped that the guys kept motivating me.''

Said coach Brian Stiman: ``His first start he threw three interceptions, but going against that team (Peninsula) is a tough call for anyone. It wasn't his fault we lost that game and it has never, ever been Kyle's fault that we've lost. In fact, he has helped keep us in some games.''

From that shaky beginning, Bauer has developed into a solid leader.

He has passed for 1,365 yards, completing 72 of 143 passes. He has thrown 15 touchdowns and been intercepted just five times.

``He has progressed quite a bit since the opener, no question,'' said Stiman. ``He throws the ball well, stands in the pocket without fear. He isn't the biggest kid, but he plays with a lot of courage and he is pretty darn accurate.''

Bauer admits courage plays a role in his ability to stand in the pocket until the last possible moment. The betterment bet·ter·ment

of the team plays a part in it, too.

``I'm not exactly the most mobile guy out there,'' Bauer said. ``It's better for everyone if I throw the ball instead of run.''

Bauer has also benefited from the presence of White and Cassaday. Both have committed to UCLA and both are usually the focus of the opponents' defense.

``That has always helped,'' Bauer said. ``You can't really explain what having players like that does for your team. Teams have to respect them so much that I can kind of sneak around and do some other things to help us out.''

``He's received plenty of help,'' Stiman said, ``but that's what team sports are about. Kyle has done his part, too. He's responsible and smart. He's not overly fast or strong, but he plays within himself, reads defenses well and picks out receivers quite well.''
