The Kings dominated the second period but could not put the puck past Ottawa goalkeeper Patrick Lalime Patrick Lalime (born July 7, 1974) is a Canadian born NHL goalie who currently plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. Pre-NHL years

The Kings had a brief flurry of offense midway through the third period, sparked by a big check by Ian Laperriere Ian Laperrière (born January 19, 1974 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is an ice hockey player in the NHL. He played in the QMJHL 1990-1993 and was drafted by the St. Louis Blues of the NHL in the 7th round and pick number 158 in the 1992 draft. , but the Senators took control and outshot the Kings 11-8 in the period. Ziggy Palffy picked up a rebound in front of the net with 42 seconds remaining, but a sprawling Lalime made the save, one of 29 total.

Ottawa had a power play in overtime after Adam Deadmarsh was whistled for cross-checking, but Potvin was forced to make just one tough save. The Kings then went on the power play with 36 seconds remaining in overtime when Curtis Leschyshyn went off for tripping, but they did not get a scoring chance.

``It was kind of a hard-fought game,'' Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said. ``It was a real physical game, a battle, and it seemed to take a while to get us going.''

The Senators outshot the Kings 15-9 from the start of the third period on, but much of the previous 40 minutes was controlled by the Kings.

Five minutes into the game, Steve Heinze flipped a relatively easy wrist shot from near the right boards, but the puck trickled up Lalime's body, over his shoulder, and just missed going inside the right goal post. Twenty seconds later, Ziggy Palffy lost control of the puck on a potential two-on-one break.

Ottawa broke through first. Todd White's shot from close range was saved by Potvin, who poked the puck out into the slot. As Potvin scrambled to get back in position, Redden red·den

picked up the puck and fired it on net. Potvin deflected the puck up, but into the top of the goal.

Johnson scored the tying goal after Brian Smolinski picked up a loose puck near the boards and dropped a backhand pass. Johnson fired a wrist shot past Lalime from the middle of the right faceoff circle.

Twice in the period, the Kings faltered on the power play. Ottawa's Karel Rachunek took a cross-checking penalty 11:23 into the period, but 45 seconds later, Heinze took down Leschyshyn and was called for hooking. With 3:36 remaining in the period, Chris Phillips was called for holding, but the best scoring chance came when the Senators nearly converted on a 2-on-1.

Kings defenseman Mathieu Schneider took a slap shot that was saved by Lalime with five minutes remaining in the period. Palffy kept the puck in the Ottawa zone and worked it back to Schneider, who ripped another slap shot that Lalime deflected away.

Palffy had two chances of his own less than eight minutes into the period, including a rebound near the crease, but could not get the puck past Lalime. Laperriere hit the post with 15 seconds remaining.
