BATTLE FOR PARK WILL START TODAY.

Byline: Ryan Oliver Staff Writer

PACOIMA - Community leaders will announce a major program today to cut down gang violence in and around the Humphrey Recreation Center as well as improve the quality of life for surrounding residents.

The project aims to use police, city, county and community resources to keep the center clean and enhance the services available for anyone who wants to use it.

``The community is tired of the gang problem around there,'' said County Department of Probation spokesman Ken Kondo. ``They said this is it. We've had enough of this. They want to be part of the solution.''

Kondo said government and police agencies will redouble re·dou·ble

Additionally, new programs will be added to the recreation center such as literacy and nutrition classes, Kondo said.

``I think this is a model a lot of communities will be able to use in the future,'' Kondo said. ``People want neighborhoods where it's safe and secure to go to the park, and we're bringing in the services to do that.''

The announcement is expected to take place about 10 a.m. at the center in the 12500 block of Fillmore Street The examples and perspective in this article or section may not represent a worldwide view of the subject.
