BATTERY TECHNOLOGIES RESPONDS TO SLM INTERNATIONAL CLAIM

TORONTO, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Karl Kordesch, inventor of the single use (primary) alkaline battery and spokesman and co-founder of Battery Technologies Inc. (BTI), Toronto, Ontario, Canada, responded to the claim made yesterday by SLM International regarding a charger for single use alkaline batteries with the following statement:
"A single use alkaline battery is defined as not rechargeable, as has been stated now and in the past by all of the alkaline battery manufacturers. It is possible to obtain some very poor and limited rechargeable performance from a single use alkaline battery, but it is definitely not safe for consumers to do so. It is possible that the battery may not only leak, but may also violently rupture. We fully endorse, as the only responsible course of action, the negative responses already made by the major battery companies to this claim."
The reaction to this announcement, however, clearly indicates the tremendous consumer interest and environmental benefit of recharging the alkaline system which BTI has accomplished through six years of research and development. BTI's rechargeable alkaline product is completely safe to recharge, having passed all international standard tests and provides many times the service hours of the single use product.
We wish to emphasize, however, that this is the result of the chemical components and construction of the product itself and does not at all relate to the charger.
If any consumer has a question about recharging a single use alkaline battery, we suggest they contact the manufacturer of the battery. This is simply not a matter of potentially ruining a battery operated device but can be very dangerous. This risk is the reason for the warning printed on the label of single use alkaline batteries.
BTI is currently licensing the manufacturing and marketing rights for it's rechargeable alkaline project to companies worldwide. Product is expected to be available in several countries later this year.
