Cal State Northridge baseball coach Mike Batesole said Tuesday no one from the athletic department has spoken with him about the program's future despite growing optimism that a $586,000 contribution from the state could help resurrect the team.

But even if the money comes through, Batesole said he would need a long-term commitment to remain involved.

``Every minute is so important,'' Batesole said. ``These kids are right on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. Batesole, who has two years remaining on his contract, said he has no intention of trying to convince players to stay at Northridge for just one year. He said a new stadium needs to be built, a 5-1/2-year commitment to players must be made to make sure they can graduate with a degree and he wants 11-1/2 scholarships.

``This isn't about winning baseball games,'' he said. ``It's about graduating kids.''

``Even if they bring it back, we're going to be missing guys who should have been there but have already gone,'' he said. ``It also could be just for another year. It's a tough decision. It's kind of frustrating. I believe I worked real hard to get to a Division I school. It was a dream. And to have it taken away is frustrating. Now they're saying they might bring it back and they have you waiting again.''

$586,000 to Northridge athletics, said the money is designed to give the school ``breathing time'' to come up with a long-term plan to support men's and women's sports on campus.

If a successful plan isn't developed, Wright said, ``Then I would feel that everybody failed - the community, faculty, students, coaches - because this is an opportunity for everyone to be involved in the decision process.''
