BAT Unveils New Electric Bicycle at Open House.

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1998--BAT International (OTC OTC

:BAAT BAAT British Association of Art Therapists ) and its subsidiary, BAT Electrobike, unveiled its new electric bicycle at an Open House last weekend in conjunction with a series of other products from the New Products Division (further announcements on these product roll-outs will occur later this week).

The electric bicycle was a major attraction of the event. Attendees of the Open House had a lot of fun riding the bikes. The electric bike, "Super-Cruiser", utilizes a new brushless DC hub motor A hub motor is an electric motor built directly into the hub of a wheel. A purported advantage of this design is that no additional transmission system is needed, thereby increasing the efficiency of the drive system.  and controller that fits inside a pancake-sized container inside the hub of the front wheel. A removable battery box is located in the frame between the legs to provide power and add a lot more style and a lot less sweat to day-to-day biking.

The electric bicycle has exceptional performance and a "really sharp" look. This is the result of major improvements to the drive system and excellent design integration. The 24 volt brushless DC motor has very high efficiency (over 90%) and strong acceleration. It has a throttle accelerator similar to a scooter scooter: see motorcycle.  but has the comfortable ride of a bicycle. Two Long Batteries in the battery box provide lots of energy for long rides. Range of the electric bicycle is approximately 30 miles (50 km) with no pedaling, (range will vary depending on terrain and amount of pedaling). Top speed is 20 miles per hour. The drive system has been placed on a "Cruiser" type bicycle frame | A bicycle frame is the main component of a bicycle, onto which wheels and other components are fitted. The modern and most common frame design for an upright bicycle is based on the safety bicycle, and is made of two triangles, a main triangle and a paired rear triangle.  for this first model. The beauty of the design is that it can easily be adapted to a variety of bicycle frames and designs including mountain bikes, three wheelers and other bikes.

BAT Electrobike has undergone extensive product development and market evaluation over the last three years including testing of batteries, motors and controllers to come up with the best products and marketing strategies. This included sale of a container load of electric bicycles to evaluate consumer preferences and preferred price points. BAT Electrobike has participated in numerous test programs, record setting runs and race events. In 1996, BAT Electrobike took first place in the Autocross au·to·cross

BAT and BAT Electrobike have reached numerous production and distribution agreements to move quickly into manufacturing of electric bicycles. The motor/controller has been produced by an Asian motor company to meet special design specifications of BAT Electrobike. BAT has reached an agreement with Long Battery Co. to distribute lead acid batteries (see press release 4/7/98, http://www.baat.com/pr4-7-long.html). The high energy density of Long Batteries (approximately 20% higher than other sealed lead acid batteries), much longer cycle life (500+ cycles) and low cost make them ideal for use in electric bicycles and scooters List of scooter models per manufacturer Aprilia

. A high efficiency motor plus higher energy density batteries leads to almost double the driving range on a single charge compared to competing electric bicycles, as well as a much longer battery life.

BAT Electrobike is planning a major exhibit at Interbike, a bike retailer's convention in Anaheim in September. The retail price of the "Super-Cruiser" is expected to be $1099. A deluxe mountain bike version will be offered at a slightly higher price. BAT Electrobike is also working on an electric scooter and a very low cost electric bicycle for Asian markets.
