BASi Introduces The Culex(R)-L, Automated Large Animal In Vivo Sampling System.

WEST LAFAYETTE West Lafayette, city (1990 pop. 25,907), Tippecanoe co., W Ind., a suburb of Lafayette, on the Wabash River; inc. 1924. A primarily residential city, it is the seat of Purdue Univ. , Ind. -- An automated in vivo in vivo /in vi·vo/ (ve´vo) [L.] within the living body.

sampling system sized to collect blood and other samples from pigs and large mammals has been introduced by BASi. The new device will be unveiled at the upcoming AALAS AALAS American Association for Laboratory Animal Science  National Meeting in Indianapolis, November 9-13, 2008.

Called the Culex-L, the new system utilizes the same concept as BASi's popular Culex Culex /Cu·lex/ (ku´leks) a genus of mosquitoes found throughout the world, many species of which are vectors of disease-producing organisms.

Cu·lex

system for rodents, in which an innovative harness allows the animal virtually complete freedom of movement while permitting computer-controlled dosing and sampling through an implanted catheter, all without human intervention.

"It is truly exciting for BASi to launch the next phase of our Culex instrumentation. The pig has become especially valuable to PK/PD PK/PD Pharmacokinetic/Pharmacodynamic  and toxicology studies because of its similarities to humans," Craig Bruntlett, director of BASi's Instrumentation Division said. "The Culex-L significantly reduces handling-induced stress in pigs, yet accurately collects blood and other biological fluids from which drug concentrations can be measured, and records physiological data such as blood pressure, body temperature, ECG ECG electrocardiogram.

Also called an electrocardiogram, it records the electrical activity of the heart.
, respiratory and heart rates."

In the Culex-L, an array of sensors control the movement of the pen, causing it to rotate counter to movement by the pig. Thus, although the pig moves freely within the pen, the animal remains stationary relative to the pen's exterior space, allowing a tangle-free harness, without swivels or unions. The system can be used to automatically collect different bio-fluid samples, including blood, micro-dialysis and ultra-filtration collections, urine and feces. It automatically stores up to 24 vials within a self-contained refrigerated re·frig·er·ate

 unit.

"The walk-away capability is a true benefit to our clients, allowing researchers to collect and store samples at pre-defined intervals according to all study protocol specifics," Bruntlett said. "It is extremely important to note that this system allows for the use of a single animal for the duration of the trial, therefore eliminating inter-animal variability."

The Culex Automated In Vivo Sampling System is designed to collect pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data during the course of drug metabolism Drug Metabolism/Interactions Definition

Drug metabolism is the process by which the body breaks down and converts medication into active chemical substances.
Precautions

Drugs can interact with other drugs, foods, and beverages.
experiments. Culex can collect blood, bile, urine, feces, dialysates, and more - all from awake and freely moving animals.
