BASSETS HAVE MORE FUN; GLENDALE RAISING FUNDS FOR ITS PARADE FLOAT.

Byline: Dominic Berbeo Staff Writer

Glendale politicians weren't able to put a wrinkle Wrinkle

in plans for a partying basset-hound float to represent the city in the 2000 Pasadena Tournament of Roses, and now the wrinkled pooch is paying off for parade fund-raisers.

Six local businesses selling basset-theme merchandise to raise money for next year's float have been running out of the cute goodies for the past two months, said Tony Dalkas of Conrads restaurant.

``This is great for the city of Glendale,'' he said. ``It's a positive theme and could turn into something even bigger than the float.''

Merchandise offered includes: basset hound basset hound, breed of short-legged, long-bodied hound developed centuries ago in France. It stands from 12 to 15 in. (30.1–38.1 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 25 to 50 lb (11.3–22.7 kg).  T-shirts, mugs, magnets and place mats. But the most popular item, he said, are ``beanie bean·ie

Gary Ackerman, vice president of the Glendale Rose Float Association, said this year's fund-raising effort Noun 1. fund-raising effort - a campaign to raise money for some cause

All proceeds will help establish a fund for next year's float and help pay back some of the $60,000 the city pitched in for this year's $90,000 float.

Stores offering float merchandise are:

Conrads restaurant, 820 N. Central Ave.

Scarantino's Italian Inn, 1524 E. Colorado St.

Crysti Cleaners, 1124 S. Adams St.

Dial One Moyle Plumbing, 616 E. Colorado St.

Plumb Crazy Plumbing, 2636 Foothill Blvd.

Joselito's restaurant, 2345 Honolulu Ave.

Ackerman said the basset hound theme had drawn a good response from the public, making additional fund-raising efforts more successful than in previous years.

Two weeks ago, the association set up a booth at the Basset Hound Club of Southern California's annual picnic and sold out most of its merchandise, he said.

But the celebratory pooch is not without some enemies, with the City Council in May choosing to tone down the float's party theme and change the name from ``Party Animal'' to ``Havin' Fun Yet?''

An opponent of the party-hat wearing dog was Marilyne Wiechmann, who voiced concern the float would inappropriately portray Glendale as a drinking party town.

She was pitted against Glendale Municipal Court Presiding Judge presiding judge n. 1) in both state and federal appeals court, the judge who chairs the panel of three or more judges during hearings and supervises the business of the court.  James Simpson The name James Simpson can refer to:
  • Cortlandt James Woore Simpson, 20th Century polar explorer
  • Sir James Young Simpson, pioneer in use of chloroform as anaesthetic and doctor to Queen Victoria
  • James Simpson, Canadian trade unionist and mayor of Toronto (1935)
, who owns ``Deputy Waldo,'' a 3-1/2-year-old basset hound.

He sent out a light-hearted letter from a ``Wally B. Hound'' that asked ``Why the big fuss over a name? It is a new century. Glendale is not what it was 50 years ago. Be adventurous. Be progressive.''

The basset hound prevailed, and the unusual fight has brought attention that might have helped fund-raising.

Float activists plan to use that momentum to their advantage and, Dalkas says, there are rumors a publicity stint is planned in the form of a fictitious Based upon a fabrication or pretense.

A fictitious name is an assumed name that differs from an individual's actual name. A fictitious action is a lawsuit brought not for the adjudication of an actual controversy between the parties but merely for the purpose of
lawsuit claiming ``dog discrimination'' because other breeds weren't chosen for the parade part.

He said a legal defense fund could be formed to raise additional money for the float.

But the efforts don't stop there. A Sept. 18 fund-raiser at Conrad's will include the auctioning of five seats on the New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. ``Putting on the Hounds'' will include various contests and go from 3 to 8 p.m., with the auction beginning at 6 p.m.

Dalkas said more than 200 basset hounds and their owners are expected to show up and vie for prizes in events such as synchronized swimming synchronized swimming
