BASS HOMER, PASSED BALL HELP 'HAWKS : JETHAWKS 10, SAN BERNARDINO 9.Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer They probably heard the final score from Visalia Visalia (vəsāl`yə), city (1990 pop. 75,636), seat of Tulare co., S central Calif., in the San Joaquin Valley; founded 1852, inc. 1874. Its economy is centered around agriculture (cotton, grapes, olives) and livestock. Electronic products are among the city's manufactures., but it's a safe bet the JetHawks were unaware how the Modesto A's had lost. It was a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth by Visalia's Rob DeBoer that stunned Modesto, not unlike the one Jayson Bass hit in the eighth inning that tied Monday's game with the San Bernardino Stampede. Bass was at the plate when the JetHawks won the game 10-9 in the 11th inning. The winning run scored in less than spectacular fashion, Ramon Vazquez coming in on a passed ball. But for a victory this crucial this late in the season it was easily acceptable. Tonight's pitching matchup: Stampede LH Ryan Moskau (2-1, 2.57) vs. JetHawks RH John Thompson (1-5, 8.28); 7:11 at Lancaster Municipal Stadium. MINOR-LEAGUE REPORT Sunday's top performers: Former JetHawk Brett Hinchliffe, expected to get a September call-up to the Seattle Mariners, improved to 10-5 for Triple-A Tacoma. He allowed four runs in seven innings to lead the Rainiers past Omaha 4-2. Kevin Appier (Antelope Valley High, Antelope Valley College), on a rehab assignment, took the loss. . . . Tim Laker (Simi Valley) homered twice with four RBI for Triple-A Nashville. . . . Mike Mitchell (UCLA) drove in three runs for Double-A Mobile. . . . Former JetHawk Allan Westfall tossed a scoreless inning for Double-A Orlando. . . . Eric Byrnes (UCLA) was 3 for 4 and raised his average to .417 for Single-A Visalia. - Chris Cocoles CAPTION(S): Box BOX: MINOR-LEAGUE REPORT (see text) |
