Armbruster is probably better on the alley than the court, though the 6-foot-6 senior forward has been one of the Mustangs' most consistent players during his three-year career. Armbruster exceeded the career 1,000-point mark early in the season. Entering his senior year, he was in the school's top 10 for career field- goal percentage (51 percent) and free-throw percentage (78 percent). But Armbruster's bowling numbers are even more impressive. He said he has averaged around 230 and has rolled two perfect 300 games. The Anaheim resident spent a year competing in West Coast tournaments on the Amateur Bowling Tour Association circuit. Jacy's parents, Dave and Debi, are avid bowlers and got their son hooked on the game when he was 17. Jacy says he was mostly attracted by all the trophies Dave displayed in the family's home. ``At first I was like, `I want to beat my dad,' '' said Jacy, who notes Dave has yet to throw a perfect game. ``I would just sit on the alley and watch other people bowl.'' Jacy bowled almost every day for six months. He was in leagues - including one teamed with his parents - four nights a week while attending Golden West College in Orange County. Armbruster, who averaged 21 points at Anaheim Katella High, skipped basketball his sophomore year at Golden West. By day, he attended classes. By night and on weekends, he hit the lanes with an eye on bowling's big time. ``If I didn't come here, I was going to try and make the (Professional Bowler's Association) tour,'' Armbruster said. As in bowling, Armbruster always succeeded in basketball. His 21.7 scoring average his senior year (1996-97) was a Katella school record. At Golden West, his production level remained steady (20.6 points, 11.6 rebounds as a freshman). He had a breakout game in summer-league competition with his Golden West team in 1998. He scored 36 points against one of the state's best teams, Chaffey. ``I had like four dunks. It was one of my better games,'' Armbruster said. ``(The Master's coaches) saw me play and a couple days later they gave me a call.'' Six months earlier, Armbruster became a born-again Christian Noun 1. born-again Christian - a Christian who has experienced a dramatic conversion to faith in Jesus Christian - a religious person who believes Jesus is the Christ and who is a member of a Christian denomination . The year he took off at Golden West meant Armbruster had three years of basketball eligibility. He averaged 10.7 points as a sophomore and 15.7 as a junior on Mustangs' teams that went a combined 50-19 and played in the NAIA NAIA abbr. National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes National Tournament. On the court, Armbruster is a hard-working post player with a knack for displaying discipline. He learned those traits from both Katella coach Tom Danley and The Master's coach Bill Oates. ``He's not exceptionally gifted, but he has one real gift and that is the ability to score,'' Oates said. ``And he utilizes that in our system.'' Basketball and school commitments allow Armbruster little time to don his bowling shoes and throw a few frames. When he does get a chance, he's hardly rusty. ``It kills me because when I do go, I still hit about 230.'' ARMBRUSTER FILE Year: Senior Vitals vi·tals pl.n. 1. The vital body organs. 2. Because no Division I college, even if I had gone to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX , would have this kind of experience.
