BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS: PLAYOFF BIDS TO 4 LOCAL TEAMS; VALENCIA CAN GET REDEMPTION.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

The coaches talked up the Foothill League's strengths all season. The Southern Section committee heard.

Four teams, including fourth-place Canyon, earned berths in the Southern Section playoffs that begin Friday at 7:30 p.m. Also, Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Christian, the Westside League runner-up, earned entry.

Of the four Foothill teams, two received favorable draws: league champion Hart and runner-up Valencia. The17-9 Indians are seeded second in region two and will host St. John Bosco "Don Bosco" redirects here. For other uses, see Bosco (disambiguation).
Saint Don Bosco, born Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco, and known in English as John Bosco
. Valencia (20-6) is seeded third in region one and will host Don Lugo, an at-large team.

A look at the teams:

Hart: Coach David Montgomery David Montgomery (1927) is Farnam Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University. Montgomery is considered one of the foremost academics specializing in United States labor history and has written extensively on the subject.  has said all along his team would get better as the season progressed.

``I wouldn't want to play us at the end,'' he said back in December.

His team has proved him right. Not only did it beat preseason favorite Valencia twice, it showed it has a bona fide [Latin, In good faith.] Honest; genuine; actual; authentic; acting without the intention of defrauding.

A bona fide purchaser is one who purchases property for a valuable consideration that is inducement for entering into a contract and without suspicion of being
leader in J.T. Stotts - the kind of player who can step up and take control.

St. John Bosco is beatable, and a win would create a second-round match against either Canyon or Loyola. The Indians beat Canyon twice and split with Loyola during the season.

The real question for Hart is, will the other players step forward if Stotts has an off night? Montgomery expects the playoff teams to be more defensively disciplined. That means they will key on Stotts and might have more success in stopping him.

If that happens, someone needs to step in. Only once this season was Stotts not the leading scorer (David Neill David Neill (born July 17 1980[]) was an American college football quarterback for the University of Nevada. In 1998 he set an NCAA record for most touchdown passes in a season by a freshman with 29 thrown.  scored 24 to Stotts' 19 in a 55-53 win over Canyon). One reason Hart lost to Burroughs two weeks ago was no one stepped in when Stotts had a cold shooting night. Stotts scored 13 and Neill was next with 12.

Montgomery's team playoff goal is to have four players scoring in or near double figures. He has the personnel to do it with Stotts, Neill, Jerry Owens Jerry Lee Owens (born on February 16, 1981 in Hollywood, California) is a Major League Baseball outfielder currently with the Chicago White Sox. He played most of the 2006 season with the AAA Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox affiliation) of the International League, but was  and either Greg Pitzer or Jeff Whitmore. The good news is Stotts' shin splints Shin Splints Definition

and Owens' ankle are healthy, so a run to the regional final against top-seeded Pacifica isn't out of the question.

Valencia: It's a different postseason for the Vikings. Last year, coach Gary Spindt pulled out all of the motivation tricks he could, including a screening of ``Hoosiers,'' to prepare his at-large team for top-seeded Compton.

This year, Spindt is optimistic they can win the first game. He also doesn't think 25-1 and top-seeded Glendora is as strong as Compton was last year.

But to get to Glendora, the Vikings must win two games. The way to do that is to play up-tempo and continue to improve the defense and discipline.

At least one player thinks it's possible. Center Jerrohn Jordan was on the phone Sunday morning Sunday Morning may refer to:

  • CBS News Sunday Morning, a television news program on CBS in the United States

trying to find out who his team would face. Spindt said he was showing his willingness to put aside the seven-point performance (11 points below his season average) and focus on the task ahead.

``He was jazzed,'' Spindt said. ``We get a possibility of going a number of games into the playoffs.''

Canyon:The Cowboys (10-16) earned the minimum number of wins to qualify for an at-large berth and draw a Loyola team that is comparable to them in height (or lack of) and guard play.

Coach Dave Humphreys said three players must emerge in the postseason: center Everett Bryson, guard Jeremy Suarez Jeremy Steven Suarez (born July 6, 1990 in Burbank, California) is an American actor perhaps best known for his starring role of Jordan Thomkins, Bernie Mac's nephew, on The Bernie Mac Show.  and guard Matt Reardon.

Bryson has been hampered by a blood clot blood clot

in the arm suffered after a hit by a Burbank player three games ago but is healthy. Suarez must step up offensively as well as continue his strong defense. His 25 points against Burroughs indicate the potential is there. Reardon has been the consistent scorer and must continue to put up the numbers.
