BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS: CANYON CAN MAKE HISTORY : A FIRST PLAYOFF WIN WILL BE TOUGH.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Daily News Staff Writer

There were only a couple of items on Paul Broneer's wish list this season.

The Canyon High girls' basketball coach wanted to beat Foothill League rival Hart, a desire that went unfulfilled. He also wanted to bring the school its first girls' basketball playoff victory in history.

Broneer has taken the Cowboys to the playoffs twice in his four years as coach, but lost in the first round to powerhouse Buena each time. He said he was hopeful for a better draw this time around, being that Canyon (16-8, 7-3) finished in second place in league.

But to no avail. The team opposite Canyon in the first round is Freeway Division champion Troy (26-0), which is the only undefeated girls' team in the CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). .

``I think it's motivation, not pressure,'' Broneer said. ``They're 26-0, we're 16-8. There's no one in their right mind that thinks we have a chance against this team. But that's why we play the games. We'll come to play.''

Troy earned a degree of fame in a 106-24 victory against La Serna La Serna may refer to: People

Fleming leads the team with averages of 18 points, 11.2 rebounds, three blocks and 2-1/2 steals per game. Broneer said the move will make the offense and defense more potent.
