There wasn't much drama in Golden League girls' basketball last year.

Quartz Hill finished in third place with a 5-5 record in the league, which basically means they went 0-4 against A.V. and Palmdale and 5-1 against everyone else.

This year though, with the core players from Palmdale and A.V. having graduated, the league should be more competitive and Quartz Hill, which lost only three players to graduation, is looking to become a contender.

This summer the Rebels have played in almost 30 games, highlighted by a third-place finish Noun 1. third-place finish - a finish in third place (as in a race)

The Rebels will likely start five upperclassmen when basketball season begins this fall. The point guard is junior Brittany Benividez, who was moved into the position for Golden League play and averaged 10 points.

The addition to the backcourt is junior Jamie Jones, who played at Lowell High in Oregon last season. Jones' parents live in Quartz Hill and she played with the team last summer. But she moved to Oregon with her older sister in October to live with grandparents grandparents nplabuelos mpl

``She's probably the most fundamentally sound player I've coached,'' Brumwell said. ``And I don't think she's going anywhere this year.''

The only question marks for Quartz Hill will be in the post. Sophomores Tara Henn and Tiffany Baldridge played for the varsity team last year and are expected to play a bigger role this season.

Senior Ericka Boyer has been called up from the junior varsity and has made good progress over the summer.

Brumwell says Henn is the most athletic of the three and could be used in an small lineup featuring an up-tempo offense along with the four guards. Edwards would play power forward.

Banks also considered offers from junior colleges.
