BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: TAFT'S FARMAR AN ALL-AMERICAN.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

The coy smile Jordan Farmar Jordan Robert Farmar (born November 30, 1986) is an American professional basketball player at starting point guard for the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers.

He was previously the starting point guard for the UCLA men's basketball team.
flashed at a local pizzeria was a sure sign he had something up his sleeve. When it comes to Farmar, the supremely talented Taft High of Woodland Hills senior point guard, the extraordinary is never far off.

No surprise, then, that Farmar was named to the McDonald's All-America team Thursday, joining 23 of the best high school players in the country on the 2003-2004 team. One of those players is Arron Afflalo Arron Agustin Afflalo (born October 15, 1985) is an American professional basketball player, currently with the Detroit Pistons. He recently completed a three-year career at University of California, Los Angeles in the Pacific Ten Conference of the NCAA as the starting shooting  of Compton Centennial High, who will join Farmar at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
 next season.

``You got to like two future Bruins being on the team,'' Farmar said.

Farmar is the first Taft player to be named to the prestigious team, and the first local player since Harvard-Westlake of Studio City twins Jarron and Jason Collins Jason Paul Collins (born December 2, 1978 in Northridge, California) is a professional basketball player for the New Jersey Nets of the NBA. He graduated from Harvard-Westlake School and later attended Stanford University, where he was an All-American in 2000-01 and appeared on  made the 1997 team.

Now comes Farmar, who is averaging 28 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals per game. Farmar and his Taft team open the City Championship playoffs tonight at home against Monroe of North Hills at 7:30 p.m.

After coaching Farmar for two years, Derrick Taylor is so accustomed to his star guard's talents that he's rarely amazed anymore. But even Taylor was taken aback by Farmar's latest achievement.

``How can you not be?'' Taylor asked. ``In high school basketball it's the highest honor out there. And the thing is, he deserves it. Jordan is an amazing player.''

Farmar will play in the McDonald's All-America game Wednesday, March 31, at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. The game will be televised on ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  at 6 p.m.

--On to the playoffs: Matt Cook, Farmar's teammate at Taft, joined his friend for lunch on Wednesday and the talk was all about the playoffs.

``We want to go to the City (Championship) Final,'' said Cook, a shooting guard. ``This is our year, and we think we can do it.''

Taft has a shot, along with Cleveland of Reseda, to represent the region in the final. With Cook and Farmar getting help from freshman center Pierce Brooks and power forward Jabari Samuel, the Toreadors (23-3) have the talent to make some noise in the playoffs.

But the name to remember is sophomore Calvin Gaines, who has played four games since becoming eligible and scored 17, 17, 20 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench.

--Chaminade peaking: Timing is everything, and in the case of Chaminade of West Hills, the Eagles sure picked the perfect time to get hot.

Chaminade has won three consecutive games for the first time all season, including an easy 68-40 victory over South El Monte South El Monte, city (1990 pop. 20,850), Los Angeles co., S Calif., in the San Gabriel Valley; inc. 1958. Manufactures include transportation equipment, electrical and plastic products, clothing, textiles, machinery, and furniture. There is poultry processing.  Wednesday to open the Southern Section Div. III-A playoffs.

The Eagles are back in action tonight against San Dimas at 7:30 p.m, and for just the third time all season they'll be with their entire roster. They've battled injury and illness all year, which explains the up and down year and record, but when everyone is available they can compete with anyone.

--Star sightings: Afflalo scored 16 points in a Div. III-A first-round victory over Crespi of Encino. His total was deceiving considering Compton easily won 77-49 and Afflalo got a chance to rest. Next up for the outstanding shooting guard is Oak Park tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial. Expect a closer game, and as a result, more points for Afflalo.
