The Antelope Valley
High of Lancaster graduate Shakira Autry has accepted a full scholarship to play women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  for UC Irvine.

She did not commit to the school until last month. Autry said she was starting to look at junior colleges as time wore on.

``I was starting to get nervous (about not getting a scholarship),'' Autry said. ``I'm just happy it went right. (UC Irvine) is one of the top academic schools in the country. They moved up my list once I went on a (recruiting visit). ``

Autry, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 20 points per game to help lead Antelope Valley to a share of the Golden League title. The team was 17-13 overall last season.

She was a Daily News All-Area honorable mention selection.

Autry led the East team with nine points in the Battle of the Valley All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games . She also had five rebounds. The game's most valuable player, Chaminade of West Hills' Kelly Cochran, will also play at UC Irvine this year.

--Titan-to-be: Former Grant of Van Nuys boys' basketball player Mike Danielian will walk on at Cal State Fullerton next season.

The shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  made headlines for scoring 50 and 49 points in back-to-back games at the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Danielian was also suspended during the season for disciplinary reasons.

--Not coming back: Paraclete High of Lancaster did not renew Steve Echenique's contract after he led the girls' basketball team to an 18-6 record and second place in the Alpha League.

``I'm very unhappy,'' Echenique said Thursday. ``I was looking forward to having my whole team back and coaching my daughter during her senior season.''

Paraclete had only one player graduate from last year's team. Echenique's daughter, Jessica, will be a senior on the team next season. The school assumed Steve Echenique would leave the school after his daughter's graduation, so they did not ask him to come back, he said. ``That wasn't necessarily the case,'' Steve Echenique said.

Echenique was 54-35 in four seasons at Paraclete. The team was 5-15 in his first season, but had three consecutive seasons over .500.

Echenique's departure means Paraclete has lost its boys' and girls' basketball coaches this summer. Mike Vargas resigned as boys' basketball coach to spend more time with his family.
