For more information, call the NJB at (714) 541-4450. NJB was formed in 1984 by Dennis Murphy. ``What our organization tries to do is offer an outlet to teach boys and girls the fundamentals of basketball,'' Seaburn said. ``In a way, it's a grooming ground for local high school programs.'' The key difference between NJB and other local leagues is that all coaches must attend an annual basketball clinic Noun 1. basketball clinic - a meeting at which basketball players receive special evaluation and instruction clinic - meeting for diagnosis of problems and instruction or remedial work in a particular activity to keep up to date on rule changes, fundamentals and strategy. ``We think it's important that we do that,'' Seaburn said. ``Our coaches know what's going on Verb 1. know what's going on - be well-informed be on the ball, be with it, know the score, know what's what know - know how to do or perform something; "She knows how to knit"; "Does your husband know how to cook?" in terms of running a two-on-two drill or how to break a full-court press full-court press n. 1. Last year, NJB conducted more than 16 clinics for prospective and current coaches. Typically, each NJB chapter has a divisional category for youngsters who may be playing organized basketball for the first time, and an All Net league for more advanced players. That way, players can compete against those with similar skill levels. Teams in the All Net division will play more games out of the area and compete in tournaments throughout California. There's also a national tournament made up of age-group division champions from each chapter. Last year, for instance, more than 750 teams from all over the country competed in the tournament. Each chapter is made up of nine teams in three age groups. In addition, NJB is a year-round league and offers teams the chance to play in at least four tournaments each year. Seaburn feels that with the right amount of participation, a Westlake chapter can be in existence by the winter. ``We're ready to go,'' he said. ``As long as we have the necessary volunteer support and parent support, we can get it up and running.'' |
