``This means a lot to the deputies who live and worked up here who knew Richard Hammack,'' Deputy Steven Lankford said. ``Just to remember Rich, we get together and play the game in his facility in his building.''

The 31-year-old deputy was killed May 11, 1992, following a gunbattle during a drug raid in Palmdale. He was hit by three bullets fired inside a mobile home in the 3500 block of East Avenue R.

A suspected drug dealer was also killed in the battle.

``He was a great guy,'' said Lankford, who worked with Hammack for about two years. ``He was a hard worker.''

The seven-year veteran with the sheriff's department worked as a patrol deputy and then spent eight months on the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Palmdale officials spent $1.7 million in 1990 to buy the building and an additional $338,000 to renovate it.

Officials are hoping to attract more spectators to this year's game, which is free.

``The first few years it got a lot of publicity,'' Lankford said. ``Now it's just wives and family members of the players. It's unfortunate that we can't pack the gym.''
