BOYS: MIND GAMES

With Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:

  • Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood, California
of Studio City in finals this week, the team isn't expected to practice much, if at all, prior to hosting Salesian of Richmond on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Campbell Hall (15-0) hasn't played since last Saturday after beating Flintridge Prep 69-49. The long layoff Layoff

Already this season the team has won three tournaments, including the Father Lopez Tournament in Tampa, Fla. That experience - getting on a plane, traveling across the country and staying in a hotel - seems to have sent Campbell Hall's already high confidence level even higher.

``I think they know they're a pretty darn good team, and they're playing like it,'' Kelly said.

Kelly came to the school intent on polishing the program's image, and it is obvious he is succeeding. With standout seniors Joe Ford, Steven Tolbert and Conor Turley and talented youngsters like Jrue Holiday and Robert Ford Robert Ford may refer to one of the following:

Salesian (14-2) is Campbell Hall's biggest test thus far.

BIG RECORDS, GOOD TEAM

Going into Wednesday's game against Blair of Pasadena, La Canada was setting its sights on some notable milestones. Mission accomplished.

A 70-45 victory over Blair gave 19-year La Canada coach Tom Hofman his 400th career victory and La Canada, now 19-0 overall, is only three wins from tying the school record for consecutive wins in a season.

The 1992 team, which won the Southern Section Div. IV-AA championship, won 22 games in a row.

``We have all the weapons, and we have the chemistry on the court, too,'' said senior guard Craig Ballard, who is averaging 14 points. ``We have an inside game, outside game. Cutters, slashers. Everything.''

SOMETHING SPECIAL

When players at Sylmar learned of the death of the wife of former Sylmar assistant Brady Mertes, they decided to do something special.

The ``box'' is sort of a ritual at Sylmar.

When someone dies - a student, a family member, a friend - students get together to raise money to help offset financial burdens.

``We're a pretty close-knit family,'' said Sylmar coach Bort Escoto. ``We help each other out. And when something happens here, it doesn't take days, it takes hours for word to spread around. When it does, everybody chips in.''

BIG RETURN

It didn't take Montclair Prep of Panorama City freshman Jin Soo Kim long to get back into the swing.

Kim, who missed three weeks and six games with a fractured thumb, returned Friday to get 17 points and six blocks in a 79-50 victory over Crossroads of Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries. .

On Tuesday, the 6-8 forward from South Korea had 13 points in a 88-55 victory over Valley Christian of Cerritos.

The Mounties, (13-5, 1-0) who play Kilpatrick tonight at 6:30, are the top-ranked team in Div. IV-A.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Canoga Park boys' basketball coach Ralph Turner got a good laugh the other day when a fellow coach mentioned how Turner seemed to yell a little differently at Canoga Park's shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards. .

The coach was referring to Ralph Turner Jr., who happens to be the coach's son.

``His mother made me promise I wouldn't coach him until he was over 12 years old,'' Turner Sr. said.

``It's tough. As a father/coach you're going to expect a little more from your son. Coaching him has its good parts and bad parts, from an emotional standpoint.''

Mostly good. Turner Jr. had 47 points Wednesday to lead Canoga Park over Verdugo Hills, then had 32 in a victory Friday over Grant of Van Nuys. The 6-foot-1 senior is averaging 20 points per game, second on the team behind Aaron Perry's 24 points.

``He's sort of a do-everything kind of player,'' Turner Sr., said. ``Whatever we need, he'll do.''

Turner Sr., played in college at St. John's of Minnesota, but he concedes he takes a backseat to his son at a similar age.

``He's way ahead of where I was at that age,'' Turner said. ``Not that I didn't think I was a great player at the time. But who doesn't?''

GIRLS: WHO'S HOT

--Bria Fields, Paraclete: If there was any question of how Fields has recovered from a major knee injury last season, consider it answered.

Fields had the most prolific week of any player, boys or girls, this season when she scored 81 points combined in victories over L.A. Baptist of North Hills and Village Christian of Sun Valley.

``It's still pretty sore, but I'm not thinking about the pain when I'm out there playing,'' Fields said of the injury that limited her to nine games last season. ``There was no secret to what I did. I was just coming out hard.''

Fields scored a career-high 48 points in the victory over L.A. Baptist on Tuesday. During the game, she said she felt like she was in a zone and had probably scored around 30 points.

``At first I didn't believe how many I'd scored when they told me,'' Fields said.

Weathersby led Valencia with a team-high 17 points and 10 assists. But perhaps more importantly, she was able to penetrate Hart's defense so the Vikings didn't have to settle for long-range shots.

--Bryana Williams, Cleveland: The 5-foot-10 junior post player had her 10th consecutive double-double in a loss Friday to Granada Hills. For the season, she's averaging 16.5 points and 15.1 rebounds, despite missing nine games with an ankle injury.

``She's the real deal,'' Cleveland coach Carol Holton said. ``I can play her anywhere on the court and she'd have double-digit points and rebounds.

LEAGUE UPDATES

Foothill: Saugus (11-9, 2-2) and Burbank (14-7, 2-2) seem to be pulling away in the race for third place. Both teams have enough wins to be playoff-eligible, but would prefer to go in as a third-place team rather than an at-large.

Burbank defeated Saugus 33-28 on Jan. 7. The teams play again Jan. 28.

Canyon, the team many thought was the favorite to finish third coming into league play, has stumbled. The Cowboys are 1-3 with their next two games against first-place Valencia (Friday) and second-place Hart (Jan. 28).

Hart senior forward Joy Sterling may be out for a while after suffering an ankle injury on the final play of the loss to Valencia on Tuesday.

``She sprained that ankle pretty good,'' Hart coach Dave Munroe said. ``It looked like she might be out a while.''

Frontier: Oaks Christian of Westlake Village (17-3) has recovered since losing standout senior guard Kayla Rutherford Rutherford (rŭth`ərfərd), borough (1990 pop. 17,790), Bergen co., NE N.J., a residential suburb of the New York City–N New Jersey metropolitan area; inc. 1881. Sophomore guard Michelle Clark has stepped up in Rutherford's absence. Clark is averaging 15.2 points per game and 18 points since Rutherford's injury. Freshman wing Chelsea Carlisle is also playing well, averaging 12 points.

Golden: Quartz Hill guard Brittany Benevidez suffered a sprained left ankle in the fourth quarter of the Rebels' loss to Palmdale last Friday. ``We made it one of our goals to get more shots, and the team is getting better,'' deWaalMalefyt said.

Senior Brittney Ames and junior Meghan Walters have developed into the key players.

Tri-Valley: Oak Park sophomore guard Amanda Ruland is quickly establishing herself as one of the top outside shooters in the region. Ruland has made 41 of 86 3-point attempts this season (48 percent), higher than her overall field-goal percentage (44 percent). Ruland averages 17.4 points to lead the Eagles.

After losing three of its first five games, Oak Park is looking like a team that could do some damage in the Southern Section Div. III-A playoffs.

BIG VICTORY, CLOSE SHAVE

With its 64-40 victory over Louisville of Woodland Hills on Jan. 13, the Flintridge Sacred Heart of La Canada girls' basketball team ended its Mission League losing streak at 65 games.

The win also enabled several Tologs to finally get the hair off their legs.

Sophomore guard Arielle Orona and other members of the eight-player team made the decision at the start of the season not to shave their legs until the streak ended.

Against Louisville, Orona scored a game-high 17 points, Nicki Witt added 15 and Ashley Kokawa contributed 12, as the Tologs were able to enjoy a celebration almost seven years in the making and a shave that was long overdue.

``That's how serious we were,'' said Orona, who was 7 the last time Flintridge Sacred Heart won a league game Jan. 31, 1998 against visiting Chaminade of West Hills.
