``We're not going anywhere,'' said Taft guard Calvin Haynes. ``I'm pretty sure a lot of people thought that, but they were wrong. We've got a lot of talent on this team.''

The Toreadors, who won their first City Section championship last year behind Farmar, proved how potent they remain by reaching the final of the prestigious Top of the World Tournament this week at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. That wasn't good enough for Haynes, who has emerged from under Farmar's shadow to establish himself as one of the top three players in the region.

``We felt like we could be this team,'' Haynes said. ``We didn't play that well, and we still had a chance. This was a beatable team.''

Haynes, averaging 21 points per game despite a sore ankle and wrist, is the clear leader on a young Taft team that has a freshman (Oscar Bellfield), sophomore (Pierce Brooks) and junior (Haynes) in its starting five. The senior starters are dependable guard Jerry Johnson Jerry Johnson can refer to:

``This year it's more on me, whereas last year it was more on Jordan,'' Haynes said. ``Now it's my responsibility to lead the team to victory and my responsibility to be a leader. It's a challenge, but I like it.''

BOUND TO HAPPEN

Surging Taft will be taken lightly at the Modesto Christian tournament, which begins Monday, and Calvin Hayes Calvin Hayes (born 5 August 1960, England) was the son of Mickie Most, the talent scout, famed record producer and once owner of RAK Records.

MARKED MAN

Word spread quickly about Grant of Van Nuys guard Mike Danielian after he scored 50 and 49 points in back-to-back games last week at the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Danielian, a point guard, has faced intense defensive pressure since his breakout performances. Teams have been blanketing the 6-foot-2 guard with double and triple teams.

``I've been seeing a lot of double teams when I bring the ball up court, and that takes a lot out of you,'' Danielian said. ``I knew I'd be seeing a lot of defensive looks, but not this much.''

Danielian needs a consistent second scoring option to emerge for Grant to challenge for the Sunset Six League championship. Otherwise, the Lancers' best player will wear down under the constant pressure.

``We just need somebody to consistently hit some open shots,'' Danielian said. ``If I'm getting double-teamed, obviously, that means somebody is open. If guys knock their shots down, we'll be fine.''

The most likely candidate is sophomore guard Mike Avecilla, who has scored 29 and 20 points in a game this year. He also has struggled.

``He's a sophomore, so he's still learning to be consistent,'' Danielian said. ``But he definitely has the potential.''

Danielian, averaging 32 points per game, is beginning to draw interest from colleges. Cal State Northridge and Nevada have been in contact, Lancers lanc·er

SEEKING PERFECTION

Although he has established plenty of records and reached several coaching milestones in 18-plus seasons as La Canada's boys' basketball coach, Tom Hofman doesn't like to discuss his approaching 400th career victory or the Spartans' prospects of an undefeated regular season.

If the Spartans continue their success - they've outscored opponents by an average of 22.9 points per game - Hofman likely will reach No. 400 and has a shot at a perfect season.

La Canada's 69-50 victory over Bishop Montgomery of Torrance in the La Canada tournament championship game improved its record to 10-0 and left Hofman nine victories from No. 400.

The Spartans are 13 wins shy of a school record for consecutive victories; the 1991-92 Southern Section Div. III-A champions won 22 in a row. They need 16 more wins to complete the first perfect regular season in school history.

``This group could do it, but they could also go out and lose next week if they don't play well (in the La Salle La Salle, city (1990 pop. 9,717), La Salle co., N Ill., on the Illinois River; settled 1830, inc. 1852. ``Right now, we're playing real well. To beat Bishop Montgomery by 19, obviously you have to be pretty good. But we've still got a long way to go.

La Canada lost last season in the final of the La Salle/Temple City tournament, missing a chance to win three tournaments in a season for the first time in program history.

Should the Spartans win the tournament this season, a Jan. 5 nonleague contest at Valencia could be the next serious challenge. La Canada has won 33 consecutive Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:

GIRLS

FATHERS AND DAUGHTERS

It is common for fathers to coach their daughters at the youth level, but when it happens in high school, things can get tricky.

``The upside is you get to teach your daughter the fundamentals of the game and spend a lot of time together,'' said Grant of Van Nuys coach Michael Flot, who has coached his daughter, Mallory, the past four years.

``The downside is everyone is going to think you're playing favorites. So what I do is always make my daughter the first sub (out of the game), do the politics, and keep everybody happy.''

The other issue that typically arises is how to be both a father and coach at the same time. Often, because the father-coach knows his daughter better than other players on the team, he'll single her out for instruction.

Quartz Hill coach Mike Jones said he's often harder on his daughter, Jamie, because he knows she can take the criticism and is more experienced with the skills he is trying to teach the team.

``I've coached my son in high school, as well, and I've coached (my daughter) at lower grades, so she understands that I'm a little harder on her than other people,'' Jones said. ``But it is working out great. She's like having another coach on the floor.''

WHO'S HOT
