BASKETBALL BEAT : SLAMMING HOME HIS POINTS.

Most high school basketball players fortunate enough to get a dunk during a game generally do so on breakaways or defensive breakdowns.

Not Moorpark's Kevin Lawrence.

The 6-foot-5 junior forward - a starter for the Musketeers since transferring from Torrance as a sophomore - is ringing up the dunks this year at a rapid pace. More importantly, he's earning them by going over, around and sometimes through his opponents.

When it comes to dunking Dunking is a form of torture and punishment that was applied to scolds and supposed witches.

In a trial by ordeal, supposed witches were immersed into a vat of water or pond, and taken out after some time, and given the ability to confess. If she confessed, she was killed.
the ball, Lawrence will not be denied.

``I want (the other team) to know that I have no fear going to the hole,'' Lawrence said. ``I want to be known as a dominant player and going the basket strong is a part of that.''

But Lawrence isn't just a dunking machine - even though he has over 20 slams this year compared to 10 all of last season. He shows poise around the basket, can hit the medium-range jumper, rebound and defend. Besides being a dominant player, Lawrence wants people to recognize him as an all-around player.

Just call him Hercules

Has the real Justin Stewart stepped forward? The 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior at Chaminade averaged 22.8 points in the four games of the Chaminade tournament. This was the way coach Jeff Young

always hoped Stewart would play. But in Stewart's first two seasons, Young admits he made a mistake.

``We tried to make him a guard,'' Young said. ``He wanted to be a post player and now he's having the time of his life.''

Stewart is now stationed down low, and he uses his increased strength from hours of lifting weights for football to outmuscle out·mus·cle

On the mend

Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  boys' coach John Goffredo missed his first game in 19 years on Monday after undergoing a hernia hernia, protrusion of an internal organ or part of an organ through the wall of a body cavity.  directed the team to victory and could be running the team for two more games as Goffredo recovers at home.

``It's painful, but it's great,'' Goffredo said of the operation.

Goffredo had been feeling pain since November. Now that he's had the operation, his players could be in trouble.

``I haven't been yelling all season. I think that's part of the problem,'' he said of his 8-5 team.

Breakfast of Champions

Crescenta Valley girls' star Michelle Greco had three wisdom teeth pulled just prior to the Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  Tournament of Champions two weeks ago.

``I was stuck on a diet of soup and Jello,'' said Greco, who lost 10 pounds in the process.

The junior guard/forward insists that the oral surgery wasn't the worst part of the week.

``My family went out to my favorite My Favorite is an independent synthpop band from Long Island, New York. They released two CDs: Love at Absolute Zero and Happiest Days of Our Lives. My Favorite broke up on September 14, 2005, when singer Andrea Vaughn left the band.  Italian restaurant and brought home spaghetti - my favorite food - and ate it right in front of me while I was there with my soup,'' she said. ``It just wasn't fair. At least they could have gone in the other room.''

At least Greco says she has begun to gain back the lost weight.

``I think it was all those Christmas cookies Christmas cookies are traditionally sugar cookies (though other flavors may be used based on family traditions and individual preferences) cut into various shapes related to Christmas. ,'' she said.

A kinder, gentler coach?

Hart girls' player Jelene Daney noticed a definite difference in usually-intense coach Dave Munroe after standout Candace Boller returned to the team last week.

Boller had missed the Indians' first eight games to concentrate on volleyball.

``Coach is a little more relaxed now,'' Daney said. ``I would relax too if I were a coach and knew I had an awesome player back in my lineup.''

Indeed. Without the benefit of a practice, Boller made 16 of 21 shots and averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds in leading the Indians to the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  tournament championship.
