BASKETBALL BEAT : KNIGHT MOVES.

Byline: - Vincent Bonsignore, Chris Branam, Chris Cocoles, Gerry Gittelson

Highland boys' coach Lyn Boop's given name is Robert. His parents Donald and Pauline named him after legendary Indiana coach Bob Knight.

The reason? The Boops and the Knights were neighbors on North Vine Street

When Knight was dismissed from his Orrville High basketball team as a senior in the late 1950s, Knight's parents weren't into sports so Bob sought the advice of neighbor Donald Boop, a former baseball and basketball player whose three sons all would go onto to play basketball.

``(Knight's parents) didn't push him into sports,'' said Lyn Boop, whose brother Leslie is Knight's godson god·son

Knight returned to his high school team and was highly recruited by several schools. Donald Boop, an Ohio State graduate, took Knight to visit his top two choices, Ohio State and Cincinnati.

Knight, influenced by Lyn Boop's dad, chose to be a Buckeye buckeye: see horse chestnut.

Other options

It's taken a little longer than expected, but the Chaminade High boys are developing consistent options besides star Scott Borchart.

Through the early part of the season the Eagles (16-3, 5-1) won primarily on the talent of Borchart - one of the top sophomores in the country - and point guard Cayce Cook. But they had trouble filling the holes left by the graduation of Scott Long, Justin Beach and Justin Stewart, all of whom played huge production and leadership roles in Chaminade's Southern Section Division III-A championship a year ago.

That seems to be changing. Last week, sophomore Ryan Arceo and seniors Clarence Mitchell and J.J. Todd all had big moments as the Eagles swept Loyola and Alemany to remain in a first-place tie with Crespi in the Mission League.

The win over Alemany, in which Chaminade came back from a 10-point deficit, was enlightening en·light·en

In both games, Chaminade showed the type of character that became synonymous with synonymous with

``They're getting their varsity legs,'' Young said. ``And they're finding out that they can do the same type of things (last year's players) could do and that's made their confidence level soar.''

Young is especially pleased with Mitchell, a third-year varsity player who is finally getting some time.

With a sweep, Crespi (15-4, 5-1) takes over the Mission League race.

``This will answer the question of how good we are,'' said Celts coach Dick Dornan. ``It's a three-game gut check.''

``And it's probably going to be the biggest crowd at our gym in many years,'' Dornan promised.

Don't forget a writing utensil

Chatsworth hosts Cleveland next Wednesday in a crucial West Valley League boys' game. But you'll have to forgive the players if they aren't entirely focused on basketball. Both schools have finals that day, and even though the winner could take over first place, you can expect some heads to be spinning.

Fluker hasn't had many concerns thus far. The Chancellors (12-3, 4-0) have a balanced, hardworking team that features five players who score in double figures. More importantly, Chatsworth has shown maturity, as personified by role player Bobby Bowlin.
