BASKETBALL BEAT : IT'S HOOPS, FOR NOW.

It was an interesting summer for St. Francis High forward Anthony Johnson For other uses, see Anthony and Johnson.

``I've worked for him the last couple of years,'' Johnson said. ``I go on the tour in the summer and help out. Right now, I'm helping him design an Internet page.''

Johnson visited the Eastern part of the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. One might think the biggest crowds for a reggae show would be found at one of the tour's tropical destinations - say Bermuda.

Not so, Johnson says.

``The Japanese were the biggest fans,'' he said.

Despite the family connection to the music business, Johnson said he has other career goals.

``I'm hoping to go to medical school and become a plastic surgeon plastic surgeon A surgeon specialized in reconstruction or cosmetic enhancement of various body regions, most commonly the face–nose, chin, and cheeks, breasts and buttocks; PSs remove fat deposits through liposuction; PSs reduce scarring or disfigurement ,'' he said.

Johnson, a 6-foot-2 returning first-team All-Mission League selection, is averaging 21.3 points and scored 40 early this season in a game against Muir.

``What makes him so tough is he's hard to match up with,'' said St. Francis coach John Jordan John Jordan may be:

Leonard proves coach wrong

When senior football star Malosi Leonard told Palmdale coach Garry Phelps he wanted to try his hand at basketball, Phelps felt it was his duty to be honest with the All-Golden League wide receiver.

``I told him that since he hadn't played before, his chances of playing probably weren't very good,'' Phelps said.

But Leonard would not be discouraged. And when other coaches lobbied Phelps to give Leonard a try, he relented and asked the 6-2 senior to work out with the JVs and see how things went.

Leonard did. A week later, he was on the varsity.

``He really has been a pleasant surprise,'' Phelps said.

Phelps uses Leonard off the bench to give the guard-oriented Falcons a little muscle underneath. And so far, he is averaging between three and four rebounds per game.

He is still searching for his shooting touch.

``It's a lot easier to jump up and grab the ball than it is to make it go in a hole,'' Leonard said.

And he is struggling, too, to leave his football mentality on the gridiron.

``I haven't learned some of the finer points of basketball,'' Leonard said. ``I still foul a lot.''

Balance: great race

No such problem this year.

``There are no real superteams this year,'' Simi Valley coach Dave Murphy said. ``We're a boring league.''

Hardly.

Through six games, there were no unbeaten teams, and Simi Valley, Royal and Channel Islands were tied for first place at 5-1. Thousand Oaks was close behind at 4-2 and Agoura has proven that it is capable of beating anybody.

``This is the most balanced I have seen in quite a while,'' said Chuck Brown

Can I see your I.D.?

Never doubt the ingenuity of local basketball fans. One teen-age boy at the Agoura-Simi Valley game last week walked up to the ticket window and asked for a discount.

``I'm a senior citizen,'' he said. ``I'm in 12th grade.''
