BASKETBALL BEAT: SIMI VALLEY BEATS ROYAL, MAKES PLAYOFFS AT SAME TIME.

Byline: Heather Gripp and Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer

The chance to sweep Royal was incentive enough for the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  girls' basketball team. With the added bonus of securing a playoff berth, the rivalry had even more meaning Saturday.

The Pioneers applied a defensive grip on the Highlanders that limited them to 11 of 40 shooting from the field and rolled to a 46-34 victory.

It improved Simi Valley's record to 18-6 overall and, more importantly, 7-3 in league play. It also assured them of a place in the Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

Senior Jamie Sturdivant led the Pioneers with 10 points, but it was her defensive work against Royal's Mari Myllykoski that made the difference.

Myllykoski, who Royal coach Mike Kohl has called one of the best jump-shooters he has ever seen, had just two points. She entered the game averaging almost 17 a game.

``We knew it would be a close game and that we needed to play good defense to win,'' Sturdivant said.

The Pioneers plan was to deny Myllykoski and post player Teresa Russell the ball and make the Highlanders use other options.

Russell finished with four points.

Elise Metcalf had 10 points for Simi Valley to tie Sturdivant for game-high honors. Kellie Gessell had nine to lead Royal.

She's back: A pre-game defensive drill cost Grace Brethren's Crystal Robertstwo months of her senior season while she recovered from an injured right index finger.

She returned to practice Monday and will play sparingly spar·ing

``I hit hands with one of my teammates when we were warming up,'' Roberts said. ``It didn't seem like much at first, but after a while I couldn't bend it so I knew something was wrong.''

Roberts had the finger checked and it was discovered that she pulled a ligament ligament (lĭg`əmənt), strong band of white fibrous connective tissue that joins bones to other bones or to cartilage in the joint areas. She is easily the best pitcher in the league and we didn't want to mess around.''

After her first practice Monday, Roberts said she was a little scared because she was worried about re-injury.

``It's still sensitive,'' she said. ``But it's taped up and should be fine.''
