BASKETBALL BEAT: HART GYM FIGURES TO BE ROCKING AS VALENCIA VISITS FRIDAY.

The scene could be somewhat reminiscent of the final Friday of last season, when an undefeated year and sixth straight league title were the spoils for the hard work of the Hart girls' team. The Indians boys' team did nothing but follow that feat with a title-clinching victory of its own.

Both games - played in front of overflow crowds in a Hart gym which was finally forced to close its doors to additional fans - were against Valencia. The Vikings boys' and girls' teams return to Hart for the first time to open Foothill League play, with the girls set to tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.

``It's going to be on the road with a big crowd,'' Valencia girls' coach Greg Hayes Gregory Robert Hay (b. 14 July, 1984) in Rotorua. He is a New Zealand cricketer who plays for the Central Districts and for Nelson in the Hawke Cup competition. He scored 98 on first-class debut.  said. ``They have a great tradition and they have great expectations. We're trying to set our expectations high as well. It's going to be a great battle.''

Although a league crown will not be on the line Friday, the Hart girls' team (6-7) will try to extend its league win streak to 39 games. Hayes is thankful all-league point guard Emilie Dearborn will be nearly back to full strength to help Valencia's cause.

Dearborn, who missed eight games with what Hayes termed ``the worst ankle sprain ankle sprain Orthopedics A stretching of the ankle ligaments and/or muscles with swelling  I've seen in 17 years of coaching high school basketball,'' returned to practice on Dec. 31. She started against Duarte on Saturday for the first time since the injury, which occurred in the Vikings' third game of the year.

And how did Dearborn fare in her first start back? She only set a school record with nine assists and had eight steals. Her rustiness showed through in a few missed layups and only two points, but Hayes said her return was felt throughout the entire team during its 88-31 win.

``Emilie keys our fast break and tempo,'' Hayes said. ``We're a totally different team without her.''

Whatever team Valencia brings, Hart coach Dave Munroe knows what to expect.

``I think when we play Valencia that's the biggest crowd of the year,'' said Munroe, who is in his 11th year as coach. ``It was amazing a·maze

last year. The place was rocking. It will probably be our best crowd in league. We play Canyon on a Tuesday and the Friday nights are the special ones because they get the boys' (game) following them.''

About the boys' game: Both Hart coach David Montgomery David Montgomery (1927) is Farnam Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University. Montgomery is considered one of the foremost academics specializing in United States labor history and has written extensively on the subject.  and Valencia coach Gary Spindt were in full agreement that what happened at Hart last year has no bearing on Friday's game.

Said Montgomery: ``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if one team was 2-20 and the other was 20-2. In those kinds of games, you just throw out the records.''

Spindt, who guided the Vikings to a 22-7 record in its third year of existence last season, said he was not about to dwell on to continue long on or in; to remain absorbed with; to stick to; to make much of; as, to dwell upon a subject; a singer dwells on a note s>.

``What happened last year happened last year and I'm not going to use that as any kind of motivation,'' he said. ``If anything, I'm going to appeal to their pride to play as hard as possible. Last year is over with and forgotten. Congrats con·grats   Informal

to Hart, but it's the first game of the season and we have to do our best because every Foothill league game is going to be tough.''

Strategy: The Valencia boys' team has gone to a bi-point guard alignment. Since the Ventura tournament last week, Spindt put senior Mark Sison on as a second point guard to Royce Minor. He made the move to ``get a little switch of bringing the ball up the floor. A different way to get into the offense and into our rhythm,'' Spindt said.

The Indians have attempted 333 foul shots, or about 22 per game this year.
