The girls' team, which won the City Section championship in March, beat Oaks Christian of Westlake Village 46-39. Taft had leads of 10-0 and 18-6 before heading into the half with a comfortable 29-13 advantage. The Lions, under the direction of new head coach Andre Chevalier, would not go away quietly, cutting a 20-point deficit to eight with two minutes remaining. "Our girls just being in the game shows heart and character," Chevalier said. "I am very excited to work with the girls this summer and get better as a team." Taft was led by sophomore-to-be point guard Rmanii Haynes' 13 points. Haynes, Danielle Tyler and Haley Newell each hit 3-pointers in the first half to get Taft ahead. Christine Escoto led Oaks Christian with 16 points and and Chelsea Carlisle added 15. Sophomore forward Katie Brooks finished with nine points. "We don't have a lot of height so we have to be fast and we have to shoot well to win games," Taft coach Mark Drucker said. "A lot of our offense next season will come from our speed on defense to cause turnovers."
