BASIS International releases PRO/5 Data Server for DEC Alpha.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 1997--BASIS International Ltd., the industry's largest supplier of Business Basic software, today announced the release of its PRO/5 Data Server for Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  on DEC Alpha See Alpha.

.

The new Data Server is designed to significantly increase file-based performance by reducing the number of transactions required for accessing data.

This is seen as particularly significant for the DEC server. Alphas provide one of the most powerful current platforms for Windows NT, and as they take their places in larger and larger networks, data access times become critical. Using conventional means, as many as nine messages may be required to read a record. The PRO/5 Data Server, acting as an intelligent agent, can make the transaction from two to five times faster.

BASIS already provides PRO/5 Data Servers for UNIX UNIX

and for Novell NetWare (operating system, networking) Novell NetWare - Novell, Inc.'s proprietary networking operating system for the IBM PC.

NetWare uses the IPX/SPX, NetBEUI or TCP/IP network protocols. It supports MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, Macintosh and Unix clients.
. The company's original Data Server for Windows NT, announced in October, 1996, was the first Business Basic development tool for creating client/server applications on the Windows NT platform. (That version operated Intel PC's.)

All of the Data Servers operate to improve access to Business Basic legacy files. Combined with the BASIS ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  Driver(tm) and the PRO/5(tm) and Visual PRO/5(tm) development systems, the Data Servers help to give Business Basic users the tools they need to create robust, portable, and secure applications for modern business environments.

Early reaction to the announcement has been positive. "Our customers demand that we expand into high-end client/server software architectures," said Richard Auger, chief executive officer of Health Systems Design in Oakland, California. "We consider it very fortunate that BASIS is continuing to expand the Business Basic language to do what we need."

The product is priced at $125 per user license, and is available immediately.

BASIS International Ltd. is the world's largest producer of application development tools for the Business Basic language. More than 1.5 million users worldwide have licenses to run applications written in BBx, the company's original multiuser Two or more users. , multitasking multitasking

extension of the language, or in one of the versions which succeeded it. BASIS' current flagship products, PRO/5 and Visual PRO/5, retain all of the traditional capabilities of the language while adding such features as graphical user interfaces (GUI's), Auditing, Transaction Tracking, Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) A message protocol in Windows that allows application programs to request and exchange data between them automatically.
