BASIC TRAINING HELPS THOUSAND OAKS BEATS AGOURA, WINS 2ND STRAIGHT THOUSAND OAKS 34, AGOURA 16.

Byline: LEE BARNATHAN Special to the Daily News

AGOURA HILLS -- Too many second-half meltdowns nearly derailed Thousand Oaks' playoff hopes.

But a return to basics -- better play over the final two quarters -- and a peculiar ritual have seemingly saved the Lancers' season.

Thousand Oaks followed last week's win over Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  with an even more impressive win Friday against the Chargers, who have dropped four straight.

Ryan Cloney completed 12 of 15 passes for 154 yards and twotouchdowns, and Malm added a 1-yard scoring run.

As for the ritual, the Lancers have adopted a military-style battle exercise as a tension reducer, beginning each practice with it to lighten the mood.

Cloney, too many come-from-ahead losses this year was indication the Lancers weren't having much fun.

That's how the whole military ritual got started. It's a bit over the top but all in fun, and after winning two straight games, it is obvious it has had a positive effect.

Cloney completed 12 of 15 passes for 154 yards and twotouchdowns, and Malm added a 1-yard scoring run.

Agoura's Matt Bradley led the Chargers with 102 rushing yards, and Eric Wells caught two touchdown passes, including a 5-yarder from Doug Shumway, to cut T.O.'s early lead to 13-6, and a 13-yarder from Matt LaFazia long after the Lancers had put the game away and all but ended the Chargers' playoff hopes.

``You regret it when you start out 5-0 and lose four in a row,'' Shumway said.

``We need to remember how to win,'' LaFazia said.

Agoura ends the season next week at Calabasas, which has lost 41 in a row, the longest active streak in the state.
