Ahmad was ranked second on the SNP candidate list for the Glasgow area. Under the parliament's complex proportional voting system, the SNP are likely to claim two of the Glasgow seats. Ahmad is councillor for Pollokshields East in the city. SNP bosses said they were delighted. Leader Alex Salmond said: "I think he'd be a great asset to the Scottish parliament and a great standard bearer for our Asian community." And deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon said: "I'm over the moon that Bashir Ahmad is on course to be Scotland's first Asian MSP." Ahmad, who came to Scotland from Pakistan at the age of 21, is the founder of Scots Asians for Independence. He said: "The lack of any Asian or ethnic minority voice in the Scottish parliament has been felt deeply in my community. But today, SNP members have righted that wrong. "I firmly believe the SNP can now earn the trust of the Asian community throughout Scotland and that this will be a bond that endures for generations." The list of regional candidates was unveiled yesterday after a postal vote by members. And it is likely to mean comebacks for a number of former MSPs who won high places. They include Salmond's leadership rival Mike Russell, Gil Paterson and Kenny Gibson. But sitting MSPs Sandra White and Alasdair Morgan fell down the rankings and are unlikely to return.
