BASF restructures Industrial Coatings business unit.

The reorganization will allow Industrial Coatings to better take advantage of market potential and strengthen the unit's focus on major individual markets. The reorganization was scheduled for implementation in January 2004. The Industrial Coatings unit's products are used in a range of applications and industries, such as automotive components, furniture, and construction. This unit will be reorganized into:

-- The Precoatings area (coil coatings and foil). The company will seek to increase its market share in Europe and NAFTA NAFTA

The artisan or restorer is traditionally aiming for an improved or restored and renewed finish.  business unit will seek to expand activities in metal coatings with automotive suppliers and commercial vehicles. Employees who have worked in automotive-related product areas in the Industrial Coatings business unit will transfer to the Automotive OEM Coatings and Automotive Refinishing business unit.

-- Powder Coatings with concentrated activities at the Verbania, Italy location. The company will discontinue product development and manufacturing of powder coatings and furniture coatings in Munster-Hiltrup, Germany.

-- Wood Coatings will be organized into three new units--Glasurit Construction based in Munster-Hiltrup, Germany; Furniture Coatings, based in Romano d'Ezzelino, Italy; and Specialty/Automotive Dashboard business, which will be integrated into the Automotive OEM business unit.
