Innovative Fiber has introduced its Basofil fiber, a unique flame resistant melamine melamine (mĕl`əmēn'), common name for 2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine. Melamine is a trimer (see polymer) of cyanamide, H2NC≡N, and is synthesized from calcium carbide.  fiber, which is now being used by leading suppliers of component materials for the mattress industry. The new Basofil-containing products were demonstrated to pass California's Test Bulletin (TB) 129 standard in various mattress constructions. The new products are an important advance in the ongoing national effort to reduce deaths and injuries, resulting from commercial and residential fires. Last year, California passed new legislation (AB 603) mandating all residential mattresses sold in the state after January 1, 2004 to be resistant to open-flame ignition ignition, apparatus for igniting a combustible mixture. The German engineer Nikolaus A. Otto, in his first gas engine, used flame ignition; another method was heating a metal tube to incandescence. . The legislation states that the current TB 129 test standard (for commercial mattresses) will be adopted unless a federal standard addressing open flame ignition is developed, superseding superseding

Basofil Fiber, first introduced in the mid-l990s for use in fireblockers for commercial aircraft seating, has become widely known for its application in firefighters' protective apparel. Exhibiting flame resistance and thermal protection, Basofil fiber fabrics have won international acceptance in fire service for superior protection and comfort.
