BASF AG, Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Dow Chemical, Midland, MI, announced their decision to conduct a joint feasibility study for the construction of a state-of-the-art production plant for toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and precursors at one of their integrated sites in Europe.

BASF AG BASF AG

German chemical and plastics manufacturing company. Founded in 1865, BASF (the full German name means “Baden Aniline and Soda Factory”) was part of the chemical cartel IG Farben from 1925 until 1945, when the latter was dissolved by the Allies.
, Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Dow Chemical, Midland, MI, announced their decision to conduct a joint feasibility study The analysis of a problem to determine if it can be solved effectively. The operational (will it work?), economical (costs and benefits) and technical (can it be built?) aspects are part of the study. Results of the study determine whether the solution should be implemented.  for the construction of a state-of-the-art production plant for toluene diisocyanate Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is an aromatic diisocyanate. It is produced for reaction with polyols to form polyurethanes. It exists in two isomers, 2,4-TDI (CAS: 584-84-9) and 2,6-TDI (CAS: 91-08-7).  (TDI TDI - Transport Driver Interface ) and precursors at one of their integrated sites in Europe. The plant would have an annual capacity of 300,000 metric tons and would be the world's largest such facility ever built. The study will take into consideration factors such as location, best technology and infrastructure. Should the project prove viable, the facility would start operations in 2011.
