BASEBALL ROUNDUP: WAVES TAKE IT FROM THE TOP.

Byline: Daily News

Any lingering doubts about whether Paul Coleman belongs in Pepperdine's starting rotation were erased Saturday when the junior left-hander became the first pitcher this season to defeat top-ranked Tulane.

In just his third career start, Coleman combined with closer Steve Kleen to hold the Green Wave to a season-low four hits as host Pepperdine defeated Tulane 5-2 in a nonconference game at Eddy D. Field Eddy D. Field is home of the Pepperdine University Waves' baseball team located in Malibu, California. It was originally built in 1973, but underwent renovations in 1980 and 1999. A three-run double by Luke Salas in the second inning provided all the offense Coleman (2-0) would need against a lineup that entered the game with a .311 team batting average batting average

``It was definitely a great game for Paul,'' Pepperdine coach Steve Rodriguez said. ``He's a guy who's really matured over the past couple years. He's a guy who really worked hard at trying to improve his skills, trying to get better. ...

``We were a little timid on letting him start this year, but we felt he could be one of our best guys and he's taken absolute advantage of it. He has proven to us that he has earned a spot out there.''

The win was the second in a row for Coleman, who defeated Houston a week earlier.

If he was at all nervous about facing Tulane (8-1), which had 11 hits Friday off Waves ace Kea Kometani, Coleman didn't show it. A second-inning single by Greg Dini was the lone hit Coleman allowed until Nathan Southard lined a two-out single to right in the seventh inning. ``Coach got on us pretty bad (Friday) because it looked like we played scared,'' said Coleman, who finished with three strikeouts, four walks and three hits allowed in a career-high 7 1/3 innings. ``I just tried to come out and just be aggressive and let the defense work. I hit my spots.

``Once we got that lead, that was huge for all of us. We relaxed a little more and started bouncing around, making plays and playing with a lot more confidence.''

Pepperdine (6-5) did all its scoring in the second inning. A bunt single by Adrian Ortiz was the Waves' fifth hit of the inning off Tulane starter Micah Owings should be added to this article, to conform with Wikipedia's Manual of Style.

Kleen, who relieved Coleman with the bases loaded in the eighth, retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save.

``It's a big win for us,'' Rodriguez said. ``It proves to our guys that we have the ability to compete at this level and play with the best teams in the country.''
