But the Bulldogs used Tuesday's 10-0 blanking of Channel Islands to their advantage.

``We actually weren't angry. We took it a different way,'' explained catcher Daniel Champieux, who homered and drove in four runs. ``All the other teams have a week off, and we have a chance to keep in the groove.''

The Bulldogs (20-6) easily took care of the Raiders (13-12-1) and meet fourth-seeded Lakewood on Friday afternoon.

Highland scored four runs in the first, highlighted by Champieux's eighth home run. The Bulldogs added three runs each in the third and fourth to halt the game in the bottom of the fifth as a result of the mercy rule A mercy rule, also well known by the slightly less polite term slaughter rule (or, less commonly, knockout rule and skunk rule), brings a sports event to an early end when one team has a very large and presumably insurmountable lead over the other team. .

The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  today,'' said Duffy. ``We don't have any big home run hitters, but when we play fundamental baseball as a team, we are at our best.''

The Eagles. who have won seven of their past nine games, will travel to face Gladstone of Cerritos in a first-round game Friday.

``We have confidence now, and know we can come back to win these close games,'' coach Eric Pryor said.
