He met Spencer one day when he agreed to help coach his friend's Little League baseball team. Marino was asked to work with the pitcher, who was deaf and whose mother would sign for him. He said this encounter sparked his interest in working with deaf and hard-of-hearing kids and served as his motivation for creating the Silent Knights baseball program. Spencer's mother Barbara Montan is actively involved with the Silent Knights program and has been working closely with Marino. Montan could recall Spencer's first experiences playing baseball and said her son had a rocky start. But she is proud that despite the challenges, Spencer maintained focus on improving his skills.
