But Marino feels baseball is the perfect sport for the deaf and hard of hearing and likes to tell them ``this game was meant for you.'' He said that because of all the body and hand signals used in baseball, it makes perfect sense to include the deaf, who rely on hand signs on a daily basis. ``When a batter goes up to bat, he looks at his coach and he signs, before the pitch, the catcher signs, when the runner is rounding third, the third-base coach signs,'' Marino said. He said his true inspiration for the program was 15-year-old Spencer Montan, a deaf baseball player currently at Burbank High School Burbank High School may refer to:
He met Spencer one day when he agreed to help coach his friend's Little League baseball team. Marino was asked to work with the pitcher, who was deaf and whose mother would sign for him. He said this encounter sparked his interest in working with deaf and hard-of-hearing kids and served as his motivation for creating the Silent Knights baseball program. Spencer's mother Barbara Montan is actively involved with the Silent Knights program and has been working closely with Marino. Montan could recall Spencer's first experiences playing baseball and said her son had a rocky start. But she is proud that despite the challenges, Spencer maintained focus on improving his skills. To some degree, she also said the deaf players have a slight advantage over the hearing. She said since Spencer cannot hear, cheering from the crowd or disruptive noise from his opponents can't distract him while pitching. Marino said he hopes the Silent Knights can help boost the skills of kids who already possess the ability to play baseball. The Silent Knights baseball camp will begin at 8:30 a.m. and provide training throughout the day from CSUN's coaching staff.
