BASEBALL PREVIEW; CAMARILLO HAS PIPELINE FOR PLAYERS GOOD ATHLETES UP FROM JV.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

CAMARILLO - The supply never seems to run out.

The Camarillo High baseball team graduated five all-county players from last season's Pacific View League championship lineup, but a talented new crop of players keeps the Scorpions confident in their ability to contend for another title and produce their fourth 20-win season in five years.

Freshman Delmon Young Delmon Damarcus Young, (born September 14, 1985 in Montgomery, Alabama), the younger brother of Dmitri Young, is an outfielder on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and was, arguably, the top hitting prospect in baseball as of the end of the 2005 minor-league baseball season.  is rated Baseball America's No. 1 underclassman and Camarillo's junior varsity team For the American rock band, see .

In sports, usually at the high school and college levels, members of a team who are not the main players in a competition (such as a football or basketball game) are called junior varsity players.
has won four consecutive league titles. Many of the players comprised last summer's American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  Camarillo `B' team, which earned a berth in the district final by beating teams loaded with varsity players.

``They've won all their lives,'' Scorpions coach Scott Cline cline, in biology, any gradual change in a particular characteristic of a population of organisms from one end of the geographical range of the population to the other.  said. ``They've won in Little League, they've won in Legion and JV. Now, it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia.  how'll they'll react when the pressure's on.

``I'm concerned with how we'll be in the tight ballgames. I'm anxious to see how they do in the first 10 games.''

Camarillo has enough proven talent returning to keep the Scorpions competitive even if the newcomers take time adjusting.

Senior catcher Spencer Wyman leads a group of five returning all-league players, including fellow All-Ventura County selection John Gonzalez, a senior left-handed pitcher. Speedy senior Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:
  • Kevin Brown (baseball) (b. 1965), a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher with 211 career wins
  • Kevin D. Brown (b.
is back in the outfield and senior Mike Lopez returns as the closer for a staff Cline describes as ``very, very young.''

Among those aiming to make an impact on the mound are sophomore Travis Sutton, who had a solid summer, and junior Jimmy Alstot, who is 17-0 in his two years in the lower levels of Camarillo's program. Young's 85-mph pitches are enough to make Cline comfortable taking the freshman out of center field to be used as a reliever. Junior Jacob Medina and senior Mike Tilford add to the Scorpions' deep staff.

``I don't have the Chris Cordeiro (of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. ), the Matt Merricks (of Oxnard),'' Cline said of lacking a dominant pitcher, ``but I'm feeling good about my depth.''

Backing up the pitching is a vastly different defense, including an entirely new infield. Sophomore Justin Frash takes over at third base and junior Jeff Hamilton Jeff Hamilton may refer to the following:
  • Jeff Hamilton (baseball player), of the Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Jeff Hamilton (ice hockey), with the Carolina Hurricanes
  • Jeff Hamilton (drummer), a jazz drummer who has played with Diana Krall
starts at shortstop. First and second base are undecided. Junior J.D. Peterson will put his speed to use in the outfield alongside Young and Brown.

Offensively, the Scorpions look solid, but Cline is not expecting the power his team has been known for in recent years.

Camarillo opens its season today in the Westside tournament.

As for league, the graduation of Rio Mesa of Oxnard pitcher Greg Ramirez, who now plays for Pepperdine, rid the Scorpions of their biggest threat from last season, but Oxnard's pitching could be enough take the title this year.

``Our league's gonna gon·na

be tough,'' Cline said. ``Last year, I thought going from the Marmonte to the Pacific View, it was going to be a step down. There's not those games against Westlake, Thousand Oaks and Royal, but there's some good competition.

``I don't want to count us out. People are gonna have to take the throne away from us.''
