BASEBALL OPENS WITH SOFTIE : WHEN THE U.S. FACED NICARAGUA THIS SUMMER, IT WAS NO CONTEST.

Byline: Jon Wilner Daily News Staff Writer

The U.S. Olympic baseball team, featuring four area players, opens pool play against Nicaragua this morning at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium     [ . It is an opponent the U.S. crushed in a four-game series earlier this summer.

His nicknames include "Ferocious" and "The Aztec Warrior".  opens his medal drive today at 12:30 p.m. against Tengiz Meschedze of Georgia - the country, not the state.

``I'm not paying too much attention to the draw,'' Vargas said 24 hours before it was announced. ``We're all here to try to win gold medals. Regardless of who you fight, you have to fight the best guy at some point.''

The U.S. men are 0-19-3 in Olympic competition. This year, they needed the host-country invitation to qualify.

Been there, done that: The U.S. women's volleyball team, with former Bruins Elaine Young and Paula Weishoff, opens pool play against the Ukraine today at 4:30 p.m. at the Omni.

It's Weishoff's third Olympics, and she is the only current player to have been a part of America's most successful team ever, the 1984 silver medalist.

``I get goose bumps goose bumps or goose pimples: see gooseflesh.  (thinking about '84),'' she said. ``It's a totally awesome feeling. Barcelona was great, but knowing that all of our fans are here, I just say, `Gosh, they're all here for us!' I tell my teammates that it's the most incredible thing that will ever happen to them.''

This is Young's first Olympics.

The first fodder: New Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal (pronounced "shak-KEEL") (born March 6, 1972 in Newark, New Jersey), frequently referred to simply as Shaq, is an American professional basketball player, generally regarded as one of the most dominant in the National Basketball Association (NBA). , former UCLA star Reggie Miller Reginald Wayne Miller (born August 24, 1965, in Riverside, California) is a retired American professional basketball player. Also: UCLA's Frankie Hejduk is expected to start today when the U.S. men's soccer team plays powerful Argentina in Birmingham, Ala. . . .

Former Bruins gymnast Chainey Umphrey will not participate in the horizontal bar or vault in the team competition. Only six members of the seven-man team are allowed to perform in each event.

The double whammy for Umphrey, an Albuquerque, N.M., native, is that he's also ineligible for those events in the individual competition - and, thus, the all-around title. He finished fifth in the horizontal-bar competition at the World Championships in 1995.

``It's one of the most disappointing things that has ever happened to me, not competing in my best chance for a medal,'' he told USA Today. . . .

Camarillo's Denny Fercho (fractured foot) has rejoined the handball handball

team after having a metal plate surgically inserted last week. . . .

Simi Valley's Justin Huish has been named captain of the archery team. Why? He said that if nobody else wanted it, he'd do it. Huish has been profiled by People, ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  and Time (by photographer Annie Leibovitz).

But the team is in turmoil. Five of the six members, including Huish, have asked coach Mike King to resign after he failed to attend an event in Germany and training camp in Atlanta, USA Today reported. King refused to resign because of a commitment to the National Archery Association.

Each U.S. team member has a personal coach. Huish's is assistant Lloyd Brown. . . .

First baseman Sheila Cornell from Woodland Hills led the U.S. women's softball team in batting average (.447) and home runs (14) during its 2-1/2-month exhibition tour. Former Bruin Lisa Fernandez was 14-0 with a 0.00 ERA. UCLA recruit Christa Williams was 10-0 with a 0.14 ERA. The team was 60-1.
