Since beating the Indians, Florida has shed nearly half its roster either by trade, release or the expansion draft. The salaries of those dozen players accounted for $29.34 million of the Marlins' $53.54 million payroll last season.

The Marlins - or whatever remains of them - are scheduled to visit President Clinton at the White House on Feb. 17 as part of their championship celebration.

In addition, pitcher Tony Saunders was taken by Tampa Bay in the expansion draft, first baseman Darren Daulton became a free agent and retired, and infielder Alex Arias was released.

Angels update: General manager Bill Bavasi said there is a ``50/50'' chance that starting left-hander Allen Watson will sign before his arbitration hearing Feb. 17.

After filing for arbitration on Jan. 15, Watson became the first Angel to do so since Bavasi became general manager in 1994. On Jan. 19, the 27-year-old, who was acquired from San Francisco on Nov. 27, 1996, asked for $3.375 million and the Angels countered with $2.3 million.

Last season, Watson posted a 12-12 record, a 4.93 ERA and established career highs in wins, games (35), starts (34), innings pitched (199) and strikeouts (141) during his first season with Anaheim. However, he also allowed a major-league-worst 37 home runs and allowed career-worst numbers in hits allowed (220), runs (121) and walks (73).

Bavasi also said that the Angels and many other major-league teams are interested in free-agent pitcher Jack McDowell, who was scouted by numerous teams during a recent tryout. The Van Nuys native had loose tissue removed from his right pitching elbow on May 20 and was just 3-3 with a 5.09 ERA in eight games last season for the Cleveland Indians. The 1993 Cy Young Award winner made $4.8 million last season and the Angels have been speaking with his brother Jim, who is his agent. Bavasi said that Jack was ``in great shape'' and ``was throwing well enough to start.''
