BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: VIKINGS ENJOY SUMMER SUCCESS.

Byline: HEATHER GRIPP Staff Writer

Valencia High's baseball success hasn't taken a summer break. After winning the Foothill League title this spring during the high school season, the Vikings are contending for a summer championship in the Valley Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

Valencia plays top-seeded Cleveland of Reseda at 10 a.m. for a berth in Monday's VIBL final.

Valencia (16-9-1) finished the VIBL regular season in fifth place in the league's seven-inning division but is on a roll during the postseason.

The Vikings are coming off a 12-3 upset of second-place Saugus. If they can pull off another upset, this time against Cleveland, they'll play for the title at 7 p.m. Monday at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999). .

Valencia has come close to summer championships the past two years but hasn't won the VIBL title since beating Hart in the 2002 final. Valencia was eliminated in the 2004 semifinals by eventual champion Hart of Newhall, and lost 8-5 in last year's final against El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

 of Woodland Hills.

Returning to the title game won't be easy. Undefeated Cleveland (19-0) has a variety of threats on the mound and at the plate, led by senior Mickey Brodsky, who is batting .564. The Cavaliers, who finished first in the VIBL's nine-inning division, have not faced the Vikings this summer.

The winner of today's game faces either Crespi of Encino or Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  for the title.

End of the road: Hart (18-8) and Saugus (19-5) both saw their summer seasons end Thursday in the VIBL quarterfinals. While Saugus lost to Valencia, Hart fell to Cleveland, 4-3, with the winning run scoring on a two-strike suicide squeeze Noun 1. suicide squeeze - the runner on third base starts home as the pitcher delivers the ball

Saugus was the second Foothill rival in a row to have its season ended by Valencia. The Vikings rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Canyon 5-3 on Tuesday. The Cowboys cowboys, in American history.
