BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: THOMPSON QUITS ALEMANY FOR NEW JOB.

Alemany High of Mission Hills baseball coach Randy Thompson has resigned and accepted the same job at Golden Valley High, the Santa Clarita school set to open in the fall.

Former coach Tim Browne will return to his old post at Alemany.

Thompson, who also served as the school's athletic director, had been at Alemany for 10 years.

In his four seasons as baseball coach, the Indians were 65-46, including a 16-14 mark by this year's team that finished third in the Mission Leagues and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

--Bad news for Ware: Quartz Hill senior standout Matt Ware's sore arm turned out to be more serious than initially believed. Ware, a shortstop/pitcher who has signed with UCLA and was expected to be one of the area's top draft prospects this year, is scheduled to have Tommy John surgery next week and may be sidelined for more than a year.

Ware felt discomfort in his arm while pitching in Quartz Hill's first-round playoff game against Norco. He left the game, but was encouraged when an MRI did not show damage.
