BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: LEAGUE TITLE IN VALENCIA'S GRASP.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

There are more than two weeks left in the regular season, but the Valencia High baseball team can essentially secure its third consecutive Foothill League title this week.

The Vikings' pivotal game is Wednesday against second-place Saugus, a team Valencia already has defeated twice this season. A victory would give the Vikings a 3 1/2-game lead in the standings with only two of its remaining league games against an opponent with a winning record.

Even if Saugus (13-4-2, 5-2-1) beats Valencia, it would need outside help to catch the Vikings (12-5, 8-0).

The week will be a busy one for Valencia and Saugus as they both play three league games. Wednesday's contest is a rescheduled game from its original date, which allowed the Vikings to compete in the National Classic.

Valencia is coming off a week in which it outscored Burbank a combined 41-3 in two victories. The Vikings hit five home runs last week, one more than Saugus has all season.

--Pascolla power: Valencia is used to counting on senior Wes Pascolla as a constant source of offense and steady catcher behind the plate. But now the Vikings are also getting quality pitching from an all-Pascolla battery.
