BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: HART ON A ROLL AT RIGHT TIME.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

The likelihood of the Hart High baseball team qualifying for the Southern Section playoffs was less and less by late April, when the Indians fell below .500 and struggled to stay in the Foothill League's top three.

But things couldn't be much brighter for the Indians than they are heading into today's second round of the Div. II playoffs. Hart continued its late-season surge with a 14-1 upset of Westlake, which was coming off a fourth consecutive Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ``Everyone is finally coming together and realizing we don't need to hit home runs all the time to win,'' Indians senior catcher Ian Feldman said. ``The home runs will happen sometimes, but that's not how we win. We win by doing the little things right.''

Little things might be the keys to Hart's success, but the Indians (15-12) also did plenty of big things Friday. Senior Danny Williams Danny Williams may refer to:

Hart is making a habit of using doubles to do its damage. The Indians have only 26 home runs - nine from Chris Valaika - but they have 60 doubles. Valaika hit his 14th double of season Friday, tying him for second on Hart's single-season list. Feldman drove in the game's first run with his ninth double of the season.

Since losing to league champion Valencia on Apr. 25, the Indians have won seven of eight games, the only loss being to Div. I power Arlington of Riverside.

Next up is Santiago of Corona. Santiago (21-6) is the Mountain View League champion and is coming off a 4-1 victory over La Serna La Serna may refer to: People

--Tough road ahead: Valencia (21-6) opened the playoffs with a 9-2 victory over El Rancho of Pico Rivera, but the Vikings know things won't be so easy the rest of the way. Valencia plays host to Orange County power El Dorado of Placentia in today's second round. A victory likely would earn the Vikings a matchup with No. 1 seed Quartz Hill in Friday's quarterfinals.
