BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: FOOTHILL TEAMS ARE LOOKING STRONG.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

If the summer is an indication of things to come, Foothill League baseball fans can get ready for another tight race.

The Foothill League traditionally features one of the best races in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , with deep playoff runs by non-champions such as Hart exemplifying the league's talent depth.

The Foothill's representatives in the summer Valley Invitational Baseball League are demonstrating there shouldn't be a letdown next season.

With a week left in the VIBL's regular season, Valencia and Hart are ranked among the top three in the 22-team league.

Valencia entered the weekend in second place at 16-3, followed by Hart at 15-4. Hart recently posted a 2-1 victory over Saugus, this year's Foothill champion.

Playoff pairings will be determined July 18. El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

--Young but good: Hart has been pleased with its options for restocking a lineup that lost nine seniors. The Indians have eight incoming sophomores and eight incoming juniors playing with the varsity during the VIBL season, and many have shown they can compete at the level.

Left-hander Michael Montgomery Michael Montgomery (born August 18, 1983) is a defensive tackle on the Green Bay Packers NFL team. He was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft in 2005 by the Packers. On December 16, 2006 he was placed on injured reserve. External links

``I've been impressed with a number of kids,'' Indians coach Jim Ozella said.

In addition to Montgomery, other sophomores-to-be making an impact include third baseman third baseman
