BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: ANGELS EXTEND SERIOUS OFFER TO SOX'S VAUGHN.

Byline: Daily News Wire Services

Mo Vaughn
Maurice Samuel 'Mo' Vaughn (born December 15, 1967 in Norwalk, Connecticut), nicknamed "Hit Dog", (a nickname given to him by his Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers at Seton Hall University) was a Major League Baseball first baseman from 1991 to 2003.
was home in Easton, Mass., on Friday afternoon when his agent, Tom Reich, phoned and told him what the Angels had just offered.

    His mouth dropped.

``I was just shocked that it happened so soon,'' said Vaughn. ``I'm used to things taking a while. It was just . . . how many hours after the free agency thing began? . . . And they just told us what they were going to give us and I was stunned. They really stepped to the plate and I appreciated it.''

Vaughn, the Boston free-agent first baseman who has been free to entertain offers since Friday, was not willing to discuss terms of the offer, but sources close to the negotiations said the Disney deal isn't far off Pedro Martinez's six-year, $75 million contract.

What is known is that Vaughn, who late last week set the bar at a minimum five years of guaranteed money, has received an initial offer that's beyond that.

Vaughn acknowledged the Dodgers were one of the teams who had expressed interest. He said the others expected to put forth offers include the Yankees, Mets, Rockies, White Sox and Orioles.

``I wish that it had never reached this stage, but we gave the Red Sox a window to be able to come in with something, but it didn't happen,'' said Vaughn. ``To be honest, I'm now enjoying this quite a bit. To see the interest that was shown that quick just blew me away.''

Vaughn said the Angels' offer wasn't take-it-or-leave-it.

``They were great,'' he said. ``They understood we were going to be fielding other offers and they made it clear to us that the offer was negotiable.

A source close to the Red Sox slugger's negotiations told the Associated Press Associated Press: see news agency.
