The first few weeks of the season allowed the Hart High baseball team to establish that it can compete with quality teams. Now the Indians INDIANS. The aborigines of this country are so called.

Hart enters today's game against Burroughs of Burbank having played several close games against top teams, but with a 3-5 record.

``Our schedule has been very difficult,'' Hart coach Jim Ozella said. ``We've been in every game. ... It's encouraging, but there's not a third column. It doesn't say wins, losses and close. If we're satisfied with close we're not going to be very good.''

Hart lost two one-run games against West Torrance on Wednesday, then opened Foothill League play with a 4-0 loss to Saugus on Friday.

The Indians lost the first game against West Torrance 6-5. The teams hit the road and played a second game under the lights at Birmingham High of Lake Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. ``I don't think we're in trouble,'' Ozella said. ``But the trouble with our league is you don't watch out, you could find yourself behind the eight ball. There are no easy games. We talked to our kids about every game is important.''

The Centurions have just two home runs entering today's game against Burbank.

--Winning ways resume: Valencia (4-3, 2-0), which began the season nationally ranked and favored to contend for a Southern Section title, has a winning record for the first time this season after defeating Saugus 7-3 on Saturday.

The Vikings were the only Foothill team to appear in the initial Southern Section rankings released last week. Valencia was No. 5 in Div. II.

The Vikings go for their fifth consecutive victory when they face Canyon (4-2, 1-0) today.
