United Desert Charities Executive Director Richelle Olson said the event is intended to raise awareness of the urgent financial needs of various charities, particularly for local organizations. ``It is very important to draw attention to how much we all need to give to our local community and to keep charitable dollars here in the A.V.,'' Olson said. Local charities have been affected because of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina that have drawn off contributions that might have been given locally, and also because many younger residents aren't regular contributors to charities, she said.
