BASEBALL BEAT WINNING WARRIORS.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

A group of sophomores and unproven juniors replaced a seventh-round draft pick and four players who moved on to Division I college teams. The result has been pleasing for Westlake, which is off to a better start than a year ago when the Warriors were loaded with talent and experience.

Westlake is 8-1. Among its victories was an upset of Camarillo on Saturday. At this point last season, the Warriors, who went on to reach the Southern Section Division III

``We have a lot of team camaraderie,'' senior left-hander Justin Blaine said. ``That combined with little or no expectations has helped. I think we just go out there trying to prove people wrong and show what we can really do.''

One of Westlake's biggest obstacles en route to a title comes today against Moorpark, an experienced team many considered before the season to have a better shot at the title than the Warriors. Westlake doesn't face Marmonte co-leader Agoura until April 10.

``Our expectations weren't really different from last year,'' Blainesaid. ``It was just newer leadership. We were able to get off to a goodstart and get some big wins against teams like Royal and Camarillo. People were talking about Agoura and Moorpark being the teams in league, and we weren't going to do anything, but we don't expect to ever lose in league. We expect to win every game at home. BAEZA THE SLUGGER

Poly of Sun Valley senior Eddie Baeza's pitching is attracting enough attention from scouts to prompt coach Chuck Schwal to put dates of Baeza's upcoming starts on his voice mail's outgoing message. Baeza, who struck out 12 in Tuesday's 6-1 victory over North Hollywood, is living up to expectations as a hard-throwing pitcher, but he also is showing his value as a batter. He has been one of the Parrots' top hitters, and has enough power that he was Poly's representative in the home run derby This is about the Major League Baseball contest. ``I've been practicing,'' Baeza said of his hitting.

BURST OF POWER

Thousand Oaks' best way to win is with solid defense and playing little ball. At least that's what coach Rod Stillwell tells his team. However, the Lancers lanc·er

earned just their third victory of the season Saturday by hitting eight home runs in a 23-6 five-inning game against Garfield. The outburst is believed to be a school record and the most home runs by a Ventura County team since Rio Mesa hit eight in a game in 1980.

``It was just one of those days,'' Stillwell said. ``It's not going to be something that's going to be our forte. We need to bunt and hit and run to win. Of course, they like to go out and prove me wrong and hit home runs, but it's not something we're going to do all the time.''

``It was a little breezy and some of them were wind aided, but they did have to hit the ball,'' Stillwell said.

THE UNHITTABLE TRIO

Senior left-hander Joe Guntz remains undefeated in 28 career decisions at Chatsworth. And he's not even the Chancellors' most dominant pitcher this season. Sophomore Jason Dominguez (3-0) and junior Justin Cassel (4-0) both have lower ERAs and more strikeouts than Guntz, who is 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA this season. Cassel, who has 29 strikeouts in 28 innings, hadn't allowed an earned run earned run

``It's keeping the pressure off the others,'' Chatsworth coach Tom Meusborn said of the pitchers' tendency to keep outdoing each other.

POTENTIAL STAR

Crescenta Valley catcher Colt Forsythe can get overshadowed in the Falcons' talented lineup, but the junior will have an important role when Crescenta Valley tries to remain in first place in the Pacific League. In addition to handling the pitching staff and shutting down the opposition's running game, Forsythe is key part of the offense. He is the Falcons' second-leading hitter. Crescenta Valley (7-1, 2-0) will play surprisingly hot Hoover (6-1, 2-1) of Glendale today and will face defending league champion Arcadia next week.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Canyon at Saugus, Tuesday, 3 p.m.: Canyon was the team many considered the preseason favorite for the Foothill title, but Saugus (7-1, 2-0) is the one in first place. Both teams have productive offenses and are fueled by the motivation to prove themselves. Canyon (7-1, 1-1) is hungry to redeem itself for Tuesday's extra-inning loss to Hart of Newhall.

TOURNAMENT TIME

Several tournaments will be keeping local teams busy for the next week.

The Birmingham tournament, which started last weekend, resumes todayand runs through Tuesday. The host Patriots of Van Nuys are the defending champions and should be favorites to return to the final, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Birmingham High.

The Chatsworth and Redondo tournaments, held over a series of Saturdays, both continue this weekend before taking next week off.

LEAGUE UPDATES

FRONTIER

Calabasas senior Brad Schultz rejoined the Coyotes pitching staff after missing the early part of the season recovering from a broken hand. The right-hander struck out two in two innings of one-hit relief Tuesday against Malibu for his first save. The 5-1 victory over the Sharks (5-1,1-1) kept Calabasas (6-2, 2-0) in first place.

Quartz Hill (6-2, 2-0) has scored 82 runs through eight games, but the Rebels' defense has been just as big an asset. Anchored by shortstop Matt Ware Matthew Jesse Ware (born December 2, 1982 in Santa Monica, California) is currently an American football defensive back in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals. He was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles on September 2, 2006 and picked up by the Cardinals.  and fellow sophomore infielder Brian Chavez, Quartz Hill has yet to make more than one error in a game, and has two errorless games. ``Our pitchers love it,'' coach Lance Pierson said. ``We just tell them put it in play, and they don't have to worry about it.'' ... FOOTHILL

Canyon had visions of a perfect season, but the Cowboys (7-1, 1-1) have to settle for almost perfect after losing to Hart (5-3-1, 1-0-1) of Newhall in extra-innings Tuesday. ``It's not something we talked about a lot,'' Canyon pitcher Jake Coash said of going undefeated. ``But we allthought we had a shot at it because this team is so awesome. We are stacked.'' After facing Burbank today, Canyon plays first-place Saugus (7-1, 2-0) on Tuesday.

He couldn't fully straighten or bend the arm. The leadoff hitter returned to the lineup Saturday and homered. Fante's return wasn't enough to help the Lancers earn a league victory. Thousand Oaks dropped to 3-6 and 0-2 in league with Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Westlake (8-1, 2-0).

MISSION

Harvard-Westlake of Studio City junior Brennan Boesch is being easedback into pitching after experiencing elbow problems. He pitched a few innings in relief each of the past few weeks and made his first start Tuesday against Crespi of Encino. He went three innings in the game that ended in an 8-8 tie. VALLEY MISSION

San Fernando's 4-1 victory over Monroe of North Hills in Tuesday's league opener left the Vikings winless since a 4-0 start. Tuesday's loss dropped Monroe to 4-4-1 and left Sylmar and Reseda as the league's only teams with overall winning records entering Thursday's games.
