TWO OF A KIND

Jason Pfau and Thomas Milone are as different as can be off the baseball field. But on the mound, they dominate in such similar fashion they cause debate among the team on whom is the staff ace.

The two returning All-Foothill League left-handers have allowed a combined three earned runs during Saugus' 4-1 start.

``We are very proud of our two lefties,'' said coach Casey Burrill, whose team has never won a Foothill title. ``It's hard to decide which one's better. The coaching staff argues all day long which one's the best. They're both that good. It's not typical to have two lefties on one team who are so good.''

``The weird thing is they are so different. One of them is the type who will never stop talking. ... The other one is so serious and never says a word.''

Pfau, coming off a leg injury in the fall, established himself as one of the region's dominant pitchers last summer when he posted a 0.55 ERA. He took the loss in his first start this season, but was praised for keeping the Centurions within one run against nationally ranked Chatsworth.

Milone's first victory of the season was a 10-strikeout complete game against San Fernando and its All-City ace, Steven Pujol. Milone, who is also batting a team-high .529, improved to 2-0 with a victory over Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  on Tuesday.

Saugus' depth extends beyond the left-handers as the staff has a 1.91 ERA. Travis Babin is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 11 innings.

Brandon Kaplan hit five doubles in an opening doubleheader, and his torrid start has continued for Viewpoint of Calabasas. The junior shortstop is batting .650 with seven extra-base hits, 10 RBI and, four stolen bases and a 1.050 slugging percentage.

MISSION

Defending-champion Chaminade of West Hills appears to have found the pitching depth required to keep sophomore ace Casey Haerther from having to carry the team. Greg Lenardson threw a perfect game against Antelope Valley in his first start Saturday, and fellow senior Chris Lopez had seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts for his first win last week. Kyle Thompson got his first victory Tuesday in the league opener against Alemany of Mission Hills.

OLYMPIC

L.A. Baptist of North Hills found a reliable source of pitching in freshman Colby Hyatt. Hyatt went 2-0 with one earned run allowed in his first 11 innings. He has seven strikeouts and two walks. The Knights' 4-2 start is the best in the league.

PACIFIC

Good starts by Glendale and crosstown rival Hoover of Glendale indicate this might be the year usual powers and defending co-champions Crescenta Valley and Arcadia are given a run for the title. Traditionally low-scoring Glendale scored 40 runs during its 4-1 start. Hoover (4-1) placed third at the Monrovia tournament and is led by returning junior ace Tae Known, who will likely start tonight's league opener against Arcadia.

Crescenta Valley and Arcadia have claimed the past seven league titles, but Crescenta Valley has been far from title form this season. The Falcons enter league with a 2-4 record after being swept by Los Alamitos in a doubleheader Tuesday, including a 15-0 loss in the first game. Freshman pitcher/infielder Dustin Emmons has been a bright spot, earning one of the victories.

PACIFIC VIEW

Camarillo is having a tougher time recovering from its 0-3 start than the Scorpions did last year when they responded with 23 consecutive victories. Camarillo dropped to 2-4 by losing to Oxnard in Tuesday's league opener. The Yellowjackets, seeking their first Pacific View title, proved they will tough to beat with Cody Nash on the mound as he held the five-time defending champions to three hits. Camarillo's two victories were against teams with losing records.

WEST VALLEY

Chatsworth's victory over Carson on Tuesday left the Chancellors just four victories shy of the program record for consecutive victories. Chatsworth entered Thursday's game against Sylmar having won 21 games in a row dating back to last year's national-championship season. The Chancellors had 26 consecutive victories in 2001-2002. ...

Despite not returning any starting position players, Birmingham of Van Nuys is off to a solid start. The Patriots improved to 4-2 with a 4-3 nonleague victory over Sylmar on Tuesday in which sophomore Luis Perez homered and had a game-winning single in the eighth.
